Havana remained abnormally quiet after yesterday's riots that left 20 dead and 150 injured, 20 of whom are in critical condition. Food stockpiles have dwindled and shortages are evident as Sumner Welles seeks a peaceful resolution with Machado and possible changes in leadership.
In Santa Monica a weekly call for a fair government settlement ends with praise for unions and the view that strikes hurt the uninvolved. The piece likens a strike to war and champions a calm, negotiated approach as the best course amid broad industry cooperation.
The Italian air armada returning to Italy from Chicago landed at Horta Azores after a 1200 mile flight from Newfoundland. Ed McCreary of Allerton visited last night at his cousin M. A. Mace's home. The Misses Arrowsyn Mare and Roberta Munroe of Wairfield stayed with Miss Verpette Johnson on Sunday night.
Harvey Coulter will perform a public voice recital Thursday evening in the United Presbyterian church auditorium. He is assisted by Carolyn McCleery on piano and organ, who will also back Coulter and play solos. The program features both artists and admission is free. Coulter is a voice student of Miss Carolyn Hamilton, recently earning a voice scholarship at Monmouth College.

Mrs Dan Anderson aged 89 died at 7 30 Monday at her son Charles home in Davenport. Funeral arrangements through L A Jones funeral home with service by Dr FO Eastwood, Elm Grove cemetery interment. She was born August 31 1844 in Indiana and moved to Washington county as a child. Survived by three sons John of Ainsworth Frank of Washington and Charles E of Davenport, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Member of Ainsworth Methodist church.
Attendance at the first seven performances of the St. Louis Municipal Opera this summer totaled 62 000 persons.
The first NIRA postage stamps marking the recovery program launch will be sold in Nira Iowa, located in Washington County. Assistant postmaster general Mahoney announced the sale will start August 17 in the small town of 25 residents, following a request from Reverend Ed Eicher of Iowa.

State Representative John Speidel travels to Des Moines to join the Interim Committee on Tax Revision. The panel will study tax revision and report recommendations to the state legislature at a fall special session. Meetings will be open to the public for input.
