Ex Senator Albert J. Beveridge of Indiana was made permanent chairman of the convention while Colonel revised the platform. Beveridge led the gathering as the event outlined new policy directions and reinforced party unity.
The first national Progressive convention named Theodore Roosevelt for president and Hiram Johnson of California for vice president by acclamation. Medill McCormick outlined rules changing the party name to Progressive party and expanding representation, while women delegates and suffragists waved a Votes for Women banner.
Mr Allen of Kansas renewed the motion to suspend rules for nominating speeches for president and vice president. The roll was directed for nominations. Colonel Roosevelt will leave Chicago today to begin campaigning in forty states, with key stops August 6 Rhode Island and Labor Day address at the Minnesota state fair.
In Minot North Dakota on a hot day Miss Jessie McKenzie was saved from drowning in the Mouse River by a tramp who jumped into the water after she vanished from her friends. Two hours later the same tramp was arrested on vagrancy charges as townspeople doubted his account.
Navy department orders naval demonstrations on October 14 and 15 with a Atlantic fleet review in New York and rendezvous of Pacific fleet at San Francisco and Asiatic fleet at Manila. Officials say the move has no political significance.
