Viking II reaches Mars in elliptical orbit after engine burn

Viking 2 fired its 300 pound thrust engine for about 40 minutes and entered a long egg shaped Mars orbit of 27.4 hours, with periare and apoare points at 932 miles and 22,126 miles. Mission planners seek landing sites in northern Mars regions with higher moisture as Viking 1 continues experiments.

Three dead and 32 injured in Neola school bus crash

A Tri-Center School District bus carrying 35 pupils to swimming lessons crashed on Iowa 191 hitting a guard rail and the Mosquito Creek bridge. Three children Page James 8 Jim Gilbriath 9 and Bobby Hood 12 died on arrival at Jennie Edmondson Hospital. Thirteen others were admitted and eight more were in fair to good condition. Driver Caroline J. James 39 was in critical condition at Mercy Hospital. Authorities consider possible involvement of another vehicle and continue interviews.

Car Damages Town and Country Plymouth in Friday Crash

A 1970 Toyota owned by Town and Country Plymouth in Washington suffered extensive damage when 16 year old Timothy J McClain lost control on a dirt road south of Washington Friday night. The car overturned 134 feet from the turn and caused 1450 dollars in damage. McClain escaped injury and was charged with failure to have control.

Ford weighs running mate contenders amid Schweiker pressure

President Ford enters phase two of selecting a vice president by reviewing names urged by GOP leaders and delegates as reports mount of an organized effort to dump Schweiker. Sen Richards Schweiker faces conservative opposition for liberal leanings while Helms notes some Reagan supporters push for a convention pick. Contenders will provide health, financial, and tax information as aides contact possible choices.

Highland District Schools Back to School Registration Dates

Highland Community District students prepare for the new term with August 19 registrations for elementary at Riverside and Ainsworth 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 9 a.m. to noon for junior high at the high school. High schoolers register August 20 9 a.m. to noon with bus transportation to and from the high school on both days.

Wellman plans ambulance fund drive seeks new vehicle

In Wellman, officials report about 15000 dollars raised to start a volunteer ambulance service after Powell Funeral Home ended service. A 20000 dollar goal would buy a new emergency vehicle, with a September 1 deadline to qualify for a Hoover Health Council high band radio. The drive began last Friday and runs until Tuesday.

Three die in Wapello highway crash involving car and semi

A Friday crash south of Wapello Iowa killed three people. Michael T. Martin 23 Burlington was northbound and after passing several cars sidewiped a car then was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Lavaugh Freyermuth 42 rural Letts Martin Mrs Freyermuth and her mother Ethel Shoopman 69 all perished. A fourth driver was slightly injured.

Pickup Overturns Near Kalona. Driver Escapes Injury

Thomas H. Berdo, 21, of rural Washington, escaped serious injury when his pickup overturned on a gravel road southeast of Kalona after failing to negotiate a left turn. The 1973 pickup sustained $2,000 damage and a fence owned by Curtis Figgins suffered $20 damage. Charges are pending.

Federal funds aid conservation work in Washington County farms

Washington County farmers invested nearly seventy thousand dollars of federal cost sharing plus their own money to install erosion control measures during fiscal 1976. The ASCS program funds up to 50 percent of project costs with a two thousand five hundred dollar limit, targeting tile outlet terracing, erosion control dams, livestock water ponds, diversion terraces and critical area seeding.
