State auditor reports show county home operations cost Iowa $454 578 in 1943 up from 394 828 in 1942. Average weekly per inmate was 1.70 dollars versus 1.70 the prior year. Population averaged 4937 inmates, down from 6052 in 1935. Twenty six homes earned a profit in 1943, eight fewer than 1942. Outside county home costs totaled 4,088,534, down 2,055,947 from 1942. Average cost per person statewide was 1.59, compared with 2.40 last year. State welfare grants went to Appanoose 526,646 Lucas 3,865 and Monroe 19,960.

Eight-Year Sentence For Grinnell Collision Fatality
