Dr Martin Luther King and 300 marchers faced a hostile all white Marquette Park crowd in Chicago. An assailant struck King with a rock but he was bruised not badly. police arrested 44 people amid disorder and fireworks charges as riot police cleared a path for the march.
United Press International reports a partly cloudy, cooler weekend with showers possible. Rev. James Bevel, a King aide, criticizes sustained hate and notes a march may occur Sunday in a 100 percent white community, with a decision pending.
Richard Speck smoked and stared at the ceiling as he awaited medical test results that could move him from the Cook County Jail infirmary to an isolation cell. Warden Jack Johnson planned the transfer if Speck is physically fit. results were due Monday.
Iowa Attorney General Lawrence Scalise outlined a broad auto safety program aimed at reducing highway deaths and injuries. Proposals include rigid rubber signs, mandatory GSA standards, state inspections, and funding for Dr. George Brown's state injury reports, with sessions tied to Governor Hughes's 1967 agenda.

An elderly Iowa chiropractor Dr. E B Hemphill aged 79 from Ida Grove who had practiced 40 years disappeared after July 27 in Excelsior Springs Missouri. Authorities suspect foul play as a statewide search continued with the FBI possibly involved.
Des Plaines Illinois UP I reports a S00 Line brakeman saved a two year old boy named David Berry who ran along tracks. The boy slipped between rails as the train passed with the helper grabbing to push him forward before he hit the cross ties. He was found under the ninth car crying for his mother.
Luci Baines Johnson, 19, wed Patrick John Nugent, 23, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with 700 guests and a major White House reception. The event featured a 352 foot aisle, 150 choir voices, a 7 layer cake, and 500 Secret Service plus police. The couple will live in Austin, Texas, and attend the University of Texas in September.
Washington County preserves the remains of Paris Valley once a bustling Dutch Creek settlement. The Walnut Grove and town lots are now owned by the Conservation Board to honor the area’s early German Evangelical community, 1848 street layout, and the Valley church era led by Rev. Gottlieb Haack.
