Wendell Wilkie, departing Des Moines for Colorado Springs, says he will not support a change in the farm program unless a better one is gradually evolved. He emphasizes preserving gains in agriculture while outlining future proposals.
Ames begins converting mains to natural gas in two of four wards replacing manufactured gas. Crews work on the remaining wards to prepare equipment for natural gas use. Gas is piped from Oklahoma, says Charles Merrick, division manager of the Iowa Electric Light & Power Co.

Earl Mundt 5 and his mother Mrs L N Mundt 58 of Rockwell were hurt when their car crashed into the rear of a Jefferson Transportation Co bus eight miles south of Mason City. The driver said he was trying to knock a bee from his arm and the vehicle also hit a telephone pole.
A. G. Lieber, a former Goodyear employee in Cedar Rapids, filed a wage and hour suit seeking 598 dollars including 199 back wages and double damages. The case mirrors earlier suits by Everett Dixon and Co and M. Hulett. The central issue is whether the local business is predominantly wholesale or retail and how the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1958 applies.
In Dubuque two men tracked rattlesnakes for bounties totaling 35.50 from 140 snakes killed. Dan Smothers turned in 99 rattles for 24.75 and hunted in Swiss Valley near Dubuque County. Charlie Davis earned 10.75 for 41 rattles near Epworth.
Des Moines reports the Republican candidate Wendell L. Willkie praised by state labor commissioner Charles Harness who said the Republicans could not have nominated anyone more favorable to labor. Other labor spokesmen echoed a positive, though cautious, impression from brief talks with Willkie. Cecil Utterback, secretary of the Iowa State employed union, noted Willkie seemed well versed in labor problems.
Lisle Hering purchases the Ruebsam Insurance Agency from C A Ruebsam and takes possession. Hering, son of Lewis and Mrs. Hering of Havre, will run the agency from the same Niein and Harmon location. The office stays under the Ruebsam name with Hering as representative for the same lines. the Herings will stay in Iowa City for now while he commutes to the office.
Glen Droz and his son from Cedar Rapids visited the Lester Kientz home in Merrimac. Marylin Petty and Vivian Nicola visited their grandparents, Earl and Maggie Burger, and Mrs. Amrine and son called on Mrs. Maggie Burger. Will Brannon helped with threshers and Carl Amrine and son Donald visited John Wieneke Sr. home.
Attorney General Robert H. Jackson proposes amending the Hatch act after a Fletcher legal opinion suggested local committees bypass restrictions. The act bans campaign contributions or expenditures above three million dollars per year. Senator Hatch urged Republicans to route all contributions through the national committee. Senator Byrnes criticized Kresge for pressuring employees to fund the GOP.

Mr and Mrs Steve Shelan goski and sons visited the Lester Kientz home Sunday. Mr and Mrs Andrew Zillman and daughters attended the annual Diers and Williams reunion Sunday held at Fairfield.

Selections include Golden Scepter Overture Yankee Rose Valient Youth Love's Old Sweet Song Man of the Hour Down South and Golden Gate. Rehearsed for public performance in Iowa with U S Field Artillery and Star Spangled Banner as finale.
Ghent Belgium August 6 Field Marshal Kesselring says Germanys air fleet stands ready for an offensive on Britain. He promises new secret weapons and unpredictable lightning attacks when ordered. He recalls Warsaw bombing as distasteful but fears London may be destroyed.
No objectors appeared at the hearing for next year's tax budget which the council adopted as published. The budget raises $46,587 by taxation and adds a small amount for bond payments. Bids will open next Tuesday August 13 for paving two blocks of South Second avenue between East Madison and East Washington streets, with the contract to be awarded by the state highway commission.

London August 6 UP John Cudahy United States ambassador to Belgium said he would urge President Roosevelt to back American relief programs for Belgium. He warned eight million Belgians faced starvation and praised King Leopold's capitulation in Flanders. He noted British opposition could block aid though he did not know their position precisely.
East Highland residents report a busy social week with Mrs Hopp's Chicago niece visiting relatives. Hester Leona Anne and Ruby Bruegee joined gatherings at the Florang and Rotenburger homes, while Alma Mae Heck visits family and Mary Clark returns home from Columbus Junction.
Charles Hayneh from Dawson endured a frightening incident as a swarm of bees settled on his jacket. Mrs. Hayneh drove to town with Charles on the running board where W. W. Delahoyde removed the jacket and placed the bees into a hive.
Eighteen girls and nine boys were selected for health examinations. Final picks include ten top girls and five top boys plus champions, with a Friday 9 AM revisit at Unicorn School led by Dr. D C Barrett. A good teeth contest grants special recognition to nine girls with notably fine dentition.

In Washington on August 6 the House Military Affairs Committee voted 11 to 10 against hearing further witnesses on the conscription bill. A proposed motion sought testimony from Gen. John J. Pershing and former officials Harry Woodring Louis Johnson Hugh S. Johnson and Lt. Gen. Hugh A. Drum.

The first funeral was held yesterday afternoon in the new chapel at the L. A. Jones Funeral Home. It has been enlarged to seat more than twice as many people. Plans were drawn by Terry Sowden and Ted Simons, the contractor, whose craft is praised. The chapel features a peaked ceiling with walnut beams and ivory ceiling, creating a more churchlike atmosphere.
