Maj. E. A. Conley notes the garment’s return after wartime use. Two soldiers sorting Company H clothing found an overseas coat bearing inked marks for Sergt. Edward A. Conley of Company C, 346th Infantry. Conley identified it as the coat he wore overseas and turned in at war’s end.
Ground is broken for a $40,000 music pavilion in Ol e son park with Karl L. King, Fort Dodge band director and noted march composer, to turn the first shovel. The WPA project will provide four months work for 40 men.

A 1934 concrete stave silo on the Rae Sewell farm south of Waverly blew down four times since its erection. It failed in 1925 twice, collapsed again early this year, and fell once more after rebuilding. Engineers plan a concrete silo to replace it.
Floyd county writer Marguery tte EF Hoffman of Rockford has poems selected for an Iowa anthology of verse. Flame on the Hills will be released next month, per editor Mrs L Worthington Smith. Hoffman won third place in a national contest.
Summer school at the University of Iowa reports a new all time enrollment record with 3200 students for the first term and 1489 registered for work during the ongoing second term. The student body includes forty three states plus the District of Columbia Canada China Jamaica India and Japan.
Judge C F Wenneretrium ruled for W R Krapfel against Bert Arbogast over an alleged agreement at the Norris Building and a west side square building. Arbogast claimed no rent would be charged on ground if buildings were idle and that Krapfel would share a percentage of the 108s in rent declines.
The Iowa Highway Commission did not act on the labor dispute affecting Des Moines road projects. They spent the morning awarding maintenance contracts while OO J Ditto, the commissioner chairman, declined to say when the commission would address the Des Moines issue.
Alfred M. Landon led the Shenandoah straw poll nearly two to one over Franklin D. Roosevelt as 450 rural ballots were tallied. Landon 40, Roosevelt 22, Rep. William Yemke 1, with other Republicans including Lester J. Dickinson and George Wilson also ahead in nearby races. A novelty ballot showed Lemke 1 and Dickinson 1 for senator.
In a bold night move, Greece bound the country under martial law and named Premier John Metaxas as virtual dictator after a general strike by leftist unions. Early the next day Athens reported calm and normal transport as authorities crushed the communist plot.

John T Beamer, once prominent in Washington business musical and social circles, died last night in Des Moines. Word reached L A Jones funeral home. arrangements pending. Beamer had long left Washington after previously managing a pipe organ factory then selling life insurance.
Chairman Leslie M. Eicher of Washington county Republican central committee announced a first Iowa district conference to be held Friday August 7 at the Burlington hotel Burlington. A women workers meeting at 3 pm will be led by district chairwoman Mrs Carrie Snider with speaker Miss Martha McClure. Leaders from state and district circles including Carl Cook George Lloyd will attend and Washington county plans a substantial delegation.

Dr Milton Eusebius Dicken a Washington born veteran veterinarian died in his home at 616 South Iowa Avenue likely from a heart attack. He was 80 and had lately grown less well with three children two daughters and a son surviving along with two sisters and a grandchild. He attended local schools served in the Iowa National Guard and practiced until retirement five years ago. He was married to Margaret Wilson in 1884 and is interred after services arranged by Sherman’s funeral home.
