Lloyd Stripe, visiting Los Angeles, reunited with his brother Al after eight years while both detained on drunkenness charges. The odd twist to the reunion occurred as Stripe was jailed and learned his sibling was in the adjacent cell on a similar charge.
Washington county 4 H and FFA members will exhibit at the achievement show August 12 and 13 at Townsley park grounds. Total premiums amount to 1400 dollars across livestock dairy swine sheep rabbits poultry with club awards for top beef divisions.
New England farm officials asked Congress to lower farm price supports as the House Agriculture Committee opened a nationwide hearing series on farm policy. Massachusetts and New Hampshire commissioners urged flexible disaster based supports, while southern Democrats defended 90 percent supports. About 100 people attended at the University of Massachusetts as the committee planned tours of Massachusetts farms and a stop in Maine.
A head on crash on a county road southeast of West Chester at 1 p.m. left three people injured. Drivers were Edith Mae Long and David William Bauer of route two Kepta. The accident occurred at a crest near the Verne Colliver residence and was investigated by the sheriff's office. Passenger Jerry Lee Fountain, 13, suffered a broken leg and arm with severe facial cuts.
Mildred Correne West files for divorce from Floyd George West in district court. She cites marriage on March 8, 1947 and requests custody of their minor child, title to household furniture, and a share of jointly owned property.
West Berlin police used water hoses to break up a 2000 strong East Berlin Communist demonstration in the western sectors. The Reds aimed to disrupt distribution of Eisenhower food parcels for hungry East Germans. Police drove off agitators and guarded food warehouses as strikes and protests widen in Soviet zone.
Washington United Press reports Senator William F Knowland of California was elected Senate Republican floor leader to succeed the late Senator Robert A Taft. Senator Homer Ferguson of Michigan was chosen to replace Knowland as chairman of the Senate GOP Policy Committee.
In Washington supporters predicted William Knowland would win the Senate Republican floor leadership after the death of Taft. A 2 p.m. caucus was called to fill the vacancy with Knowland the odds on favorite to secure the post, likely without opposition.
RA Frost arrived from Atlanta Georgia to join Mrs Frost and Jennie Lee in a visit at the parental Howard Caldwell home. They will stay another week.
Representative H R Gross of Iowa asks President Eisenhower to dismiss Secretary of State John Foster Dulles after Dulles proposed using US troops to rebuild Korea. Gross calls Dulles a liability and urges recall and resignation amid debate on troop labor roles.
Mr and Mrs Carl Guther sold their Washington photography studio after 30 years to Mr and Mrs Edwin Novotny of Cedar Rapids The Guthers 60 year old studio will have Mr Guther stay briefly to aid the new owners The Novotnys formerly ran Moniteur studio in Cedar Rapids He did camera work and she led coloring at Bryn Alan studios in Tampa They will move to Washington once housing is found Both couples belong to local Baptist church with Mr Novotny in Masonic bodies Shrine and Consistory
John C. Owen addressed the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce gathering in Sunset Park on Monday. The Jaycees unanimously endorsed the city planning commission idea, with Bill Perdock presiding as president.
Ten year old Tommy Ward left Red Springs N C Friday evening and reached Washington Sunday morning after a solo 1300 mile bus journey. He said he had no trouble with connections and was cared for by bus drivers. He spent two months visiting brother Dick a paratrooper at Fort Bragg and swam in the Atlantic.
Frank Skipton a 48 year old father of eight drowned Monday in Meyerholz Lake near Wapello while swimming with two daughters and a neighbor girl. He told them to go to the bank before he disappeared beneath the water.
Washington golfers are invited to Kalona golf club for a stag event Monday evening. All men planning to attend should leave their name at the pro shop by Friday noon.
Mrs. Permelia Lay of the Iowa State Employment Service says information is available on whether Iowa public employees can join a local retirement plan alongside federal social security and the state supplemental pension. Iowa Employment Security Commission confirms employees with prior service credit before July 4 1955 may participate in a local pension in addition to the two required plans.
Freshmen orientation is planned for Wednesday August 19 at 1 p m at Washington High School. Principal Robert Everetts urges new students to enroll at the principal's office and lockers will be assigned. The Student Council will organize the program with a pre-event picnic for members August 17 at 6 30 p m near Sunset Park pavilion.
Doc Lawson and his electric organ will entertain Wednesday and Thursday at Townsley park for the Washington County Saddle club annual horse show. Cecil Rooks of Eldora to judge, Roger Holmes of Crawfordsville ringmaster each evening. Nine classes judged Wednesday, nine more Thursday. rain date August 17. Entries from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri footer promising another fine show with ample parking and seating.
Four Cedar Rapids men died in a Beechcraft Bonanza crash near Anoka Minnesota. The bodies were found Monday after the plane reportedly went down Sunday while returning from a fishing trip in northern Minnesota. Names identified include Dr Ky J Prout Eldon M Leffert Albert Widerhoff Virgil Rose and Charles Dawson.
Funeral services for Alvin W. Kephart were conducted at 2 30 p m in the Christian church with Rev Halsey Wakelin and Rev Earl Longfellow in charge. The Everetts sang a duet and Rev Longfellow a solo. Pallbearers included Victor Muller Cloyce Lawson Woodrow Crone Douglas Crone and Don Lins. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs Anna Mary Rogers was given funeral rites at 2 p m Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev C E Strong in charge. Pallbearers included Irvin Koenig Orva Scott Frank Leeper Clifford Freel George Bartholomew and Earl Smith. Burial followed in Richmond Cemetery.
U S Secretary of State John Foster Dulles landed in Seoul amid a late flight due to weather and announced talks with President Syngman Rhee to pursue peaceful unification of Korea. His delegation, including Robert Stevens, aims to develop a common policy for unification at the upcoming peace conference. The first meeting is set for Wednesday at the presidential mansion.
Eleven FFA members and Ted Meyers toured a Kent Feeds distilling plant and feed plant in Muscatine Monday. They visited the 509 acre Kent farm and heard Mr. Kent discuss pasture renovations and starting in purebred cattle. The August meeting, led by vice-president George Moore, named Townsley Committees to run the refreshments at the upcoming Achievement show.

At Panmunjom more than 300 U N fighting men and 70 Americans start prisoner exchanges. The 35 wounded captives will be the first freed at 9 a m local time, with 35 healthy to follow two hours later. The UN will swap 2 400 North Koreans and Chinese for Allies, while the Communists return 400 captives daily until the operation ends. Some missing soldiers may yet be identified.
The Washington County Rural Young People group met at the Farm Bureau Building. August 12 was set for a tractor rodeo at the 4-H fair grounds and August 13 for a group dance at Lake Darling with Paul and his Ramblers. A district RYP camp is planned for September 18-86 at Lake Darling.
Jean Ann Shelley daughter of Wayne and Mrs Shelley arrives Sunday for a two week visit with her Crandall grandparents in Panora. Her sister Janet, who had been visiting, also returns home Sunday.
