Pvt Jim Wagaman 37 on furlough from Camp Bliss Texas died in a pickup wreck seven miles west of Villisca Iowa His wife sustained a broken collar bone Mrs Wagaman said the driver apparently lost control after a car passed him and sped to catch up The pickup overturned in a field on the roadside
George LaDue aged 61 former Wa kanda club manager pleaded guilty to violating the Iowa Child labor act and was fined 25 dollars by Municipal Judge Ralph Powers. The judge dismissed a second charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors after witnesses notes. detectives said he hired 15 year old Lovisa McDowell as a waitress and 15 year old Howard Moon served liquor at the club.
DES MOINES Iowa chartered banks reported deposits exceeding 1 038 billion dollars for the first time in state history Melvin W Ellis state superintendent of banking announced the consolidated condition report covering 542 banks shows deposits totaling 1 038 660 323 21 an increase of more than a quarter billion from a year earlier
Tierbert L. Hull files a 26 690 dollar suit in district court against Bishop Stoddard Cafeteria Co. and Macon Realty Co. claiming injury after stepping into an unguarded elevator shaft on March 7 and falling from the first floor to the basement while collecting garbage.
William F. McCrackin, 48, pleaded guilty to a three year old charge of obtaining 5000 dollars under false pretenses from Mrs. Anna Schick of Cedar Rapids. District Judge Harold D. Evans sentenced him to seven years in prison and fined 500 dollars after he had previously pleaded not guilty and been arrested by the FBI in Detroit after fleeing on bond.
New York August 4 A postwar credit program from the American Bankers Association aims to supply bank credit to every competent person, firm or corporation for constructive purposes. Bankers pledge to arrange funds if a single bank cannot grant the loan, stressing prudent lending and support for private enterprise. The postwar survey shows most credit needs will be met by the banking system, with banks already active in small business lending.
Rev Basil McBee of the Associate Presbyterian Church will preach on Jesus Passes By at a union service in Central Park next Sunday evening. Rev Fred E Miller of the Methodist Church will preside and give the invocation, Rev Alfred Trenerry of the Baptist Church will read Scripture and lead prayer. No special music planned. Rev Miller will arrange congregational singing.
The program features conductor Holmes Russell King Yoder Provost Goldman and hall long Howell with Yoder assisting in the arrangement as part of the band concert lineup.

In Philadelphia on Aug 4 partial transit service was restored under army supervision on some lines while about 5,800 workers continued crippling strikes. The army urged immediate resumption of service as the city remained paralyzed in parts.

M. M. Schell of Clinton Iowa accepts a contract as superintendent of Washington public schools and will move here as soon as housing is secured. He will start with the new school year opening September 5. Schell has led Clinton schools for seven years and previously headed Ida Grove schools. He holds degrees from Iowa State University and Cornell College and studied at Illinois and Colorado universities. The arrangement puts his tenure to continue until Erbe is discharged from the navy. Also, Duane C. Shaw signs as Washington High School principal after Navy discharge. Harp remains as head coach and P.E. leader. Additional faculty appointments include Mary Jean Cooper ONeill in home economics and Helen Caldwell in music and art at Stewart School.

Seven year old Phillis Christians, daughter of Harm Christians of Little Rock, was struck by a car driven by 17 year old John Schroder on Main Street. Rehroder was driving south when the child dashed into the road. she died on arrival at the hospital. No inquest planned. Schroder stopped within a car length.

David Niven found programs reach advancing troops, with news, sports, church services, and performances by “stars in battledress” in Normandy village halls, plus mimeographed summaries for isolated posts.
Allied mobile forces advanced at least 290 miles south of Rennes in Brittany aiming to seize the port cities of St Nazaire and Nantes within 24 hours. Bradley's columns reached near St Nazaire and Nantes, with German resistance light except near Rennes as by passes pushed south and west toward Brest and St Malo.
