Minneapolis August 4 A truck drivers strike flare led to street fighting as two pickets from the union band attacked a driver and his helper in an ice cream truck. The driver Leo Holscher was held by police. Governor Olson vowed to act decisively to end the six thousand worker dispute as 166 firms and the union keep bargaining over collective bargaining.
Mrs Maggie Byers of New London died yesterday after a two week illness. Funeral services are set for two o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the New London Methodist church. She was the sister of Mrs J EB Kunath of Washington and visited here often. Mrs Fred Rohrer lives in Centerville with a brother.
Mrs A P Jeffrey and Mrs Ella Crawford shopped in Washington. Mr and Mrs Ralph Morris and Joan visited the parental JK Adams home. Dan Maloney of Denver, Colorado visits with sister J E Adams and relatives. Oliver Easley of Washington visits niece Ted Herr’s family. Dick Willie and daughters Joan and Jewell of Des Moines visit Willis family. Oregon Roosters 4 H club met at Elizabeth and Franklin Dea home. Keith Stapp improves, home from Iowa City hospital. John Krause visits Richard Stephens home. Will Reaney family visit Harold Clegg home. D DPD Stephen’s daughter and husband to Chicago for two week vacation. Jim Martin family of Crawfordsville visit Eugene Stephens. Funeral for Mat Miller held at Ainsworth Methodist church.
A. J. Johnson reports two farm debt adjustments completed by the county conciliation board in a meeting held yesterday. The loans totaled about 24000 dollars and adjustments cut the debt by roughly 40 percent. A further meeting is set for next Wednesday August 8 at the courthouse for farmers seeking help with debt adjustments. The board's members are William Griffin as chairman and A. J. Johnson as vice chairman with Hilton Rabenold Louis Rinner and T. A. Michela serving.
Des Moines reports that cattle bought under the federal drouth relief program in 24 southern Iowa counties will likely be slaughtered processed canned and distributed within Iowa. FRA purchasing agent George H Shoemaker said the department surveyed abandoned town canning and killing plants to operate them. Plants listed include Oskaloosa Centerville Vinton Marshalltown Red Oak Webster City Albia and Dubuque. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Anderson returned from their honeymoon trip visiting relatives in Texas.

Mrs Mary E Thompson widow of David Thompson died at seven yesterday evening at her son Lee Thompson home in Ainsworth after a long illness. Born April 23 1855 in Peoria Illinois she moved to the Ainsworth area at age five. Funeral at United Presbyterian Church Ainsworth Sunday at two with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. She leaves one son Lee and three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Federal officials join DA and sheriff to pursue the letter writing ring.
County Agent W J Roudabush announces the 4 H clubs fair next week with unprecedented livestock exhibits over Tuesday to Friday. The schedule includes a Friday parade and county picnic at Sunset Park, with the big prize program at Central Park and a Saturday display of girls clothing and demonstrations in town buildings.
Weekend rain was forecast for Iowa with cooler temperatures anticipated. Showers spread across the state and western and central areas were expected to dip slightly while other regions stayed near current readings. Daryl C. Mathers of Haskina, a Democrat, was appointed today by the board of supervisors to fill the vacancy caused by Sheriff R. H. McCarty's death. He will serve until the November election. Deputy Sheriff H. M. Putnam, initially designated by Mathers, declined and resigned. The board also named Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Van Dorin of Burlington as manager and matron at the county home, noting their ten-year tenure there.
Sheriff McCarty dies suddenly of a heart attack at a Nevada Iowa sanatorium. Funeral Monday at 2 PM in the Methodist church, with Knights Templar at the grave in Brighton cemetery. County officials and courthouse staff to attend. courthouse will close for the service.
Washington county old age pension assist ance board reports 260 applications received from county residents claiming entitlement to pension funds. They expect the total to exceed 300 as more come in daily. No investigations have begun pending instructions from Des Moines and delivery of the required blanks has not arrived.
