Kids Day At Washington County Fair Ride Specials

Officials announce Thursday from noon to 5 p m will be kids day at the fair carnival. Ride tickets are three for 1 dollar with many rides for all ages including kiddie cars Tilt A Whirl and ferris wheel set up on the midway.

Saylorville Reservoir May Miss Flood-Fill Target

DES MOINES UP I report says Saylorville Reservoir in Polk County could stay below full until next March due to drought. Lake level rose briefly in July but then fell. Army Corps of Engineers cites dry weather delaying filling. The dam, built on the Des Moines River, supports flood control and recreation including fishing boating and swimming.

Bombs explode at two Manhattan offices. deaths reported

Bomb blasts hit a Department of Defense office and Mobil Oil in Manhattan. At least one person died and two were injured at Mobil Oil. Police evacuated four more threatened buildings after a caller claimed FALN responsibility. The group has a history of attacks in New York City, including Fraunces Tavern in 1975.

Makarios Dies After Major Heart Crisis

Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus died early Tuesday after suffering a major heart crisis following a Palm Sunday heart attack. He was archbishop and president of Cyprus, and his death leaves the island in mourning.

Pilots defend Harrier design after deadly crashes

Nine pilots died and Marines report one in five AV8A Harriers lost. Cherry Point officers say the attack plane’s design is sound and plan to keep using it. Capt. CIA Director Stansfield Turner told Senate committees that from 1950 to 1964 the agency conducted drug, electric shock, hypnosis, and other experiments on Americans at colleges prisons and hospitals. Bohr sisters sweep beef judging at Washington County Fair

Denise Bohr 15 won Grand Champion Heifer and Grand Champion Steer in 4-H and FFA market beef judging at Washington County Fair. Sister Deanna 17 earned Reserve Champion Heifer while David Erwin 14 took Reserve Champion Steer. Lamb judging also concluded with Sid Greiner and Lynn Brenneman as top individual and reserve in the pen of three. Mild weather and light rain marked the four day event as finals prep continued.

Keokuk port plan fades from Iowa horizon

Iowa DOT officials report plans to upgrade the Spencer to Keokuk rail line likely will be dropped. The proposed route would move grain to Keokuk and then to New Orleans via the Hawkeye state. Cost estimates reached 16 million for upgrade and 2 million annually to operate, but grain volume would be only about one sixth of what’s needed.

Makers must right Listerine ad claims

The U S Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the FTC order requiring Warner Lambert to run corrective advertising. It said Listerine does not combat colds or sore throats, but there is no need to humiliate the company since it acted in good faith. Future ads need not carry the phrase contrary to prior advertising.

Tiny twirler wins talent show at County Fair

Fort Madison ten year old Jennie Saar won first in the Festival of Talents at the Washington County Fair with an improvised baton routine to Paloma Blanca. She earned $100 and a spot in Bill Riley's Talent Sprouts at the Iowa State Fair. Second place went to Michelle Curley of Washington, with $75, third to Randy Mullikin of Brighton, with $50, and fourth to Marretta Boshart of Washington, with $25. Curley also earned a shot at the adult state fair talent show.
