Iowa State College farm economist Stephen Hiemstra links a nationwide hog price slump to a five year heat wave reducing consumer meat purchases. He cautions prices will dip further as December and January farrowed pigs reach market, with year end levels likely below last year.
Des Moines reports a 7 year old, Willis Clarence Hokanson Jr., died after a playmate, 11 year old Mike Duffy, showed him a .22 rifle on a friend's back steps. Duffy planned to fire at trees while the door held open. Hokanson died en route to hospital. authorities say Duffy initially denied the shooting.
The State Conservation Commission announced a 300 acre fishing and duck hunting area on the Chariton River in southern Iowa. The Colyn area, about 10 miles southeast of Chariton, will cost roughly 100000 dollars and start within two weeks.
The Washington Benner store marks 35 years of continuous operation with thirteen managers since its 1920 opening. Early leaders included Mrs. Riggs and son, Robert Rhea, A W Yard, C G Sands, Fred Rohrer, Stanley McKeown, Bastian Herzog, Dale Fuhr, Harold Moore, Marion Swanson, Earl Okerstrom, Marvin Carter, and current manager Bill Gallagher. Many former staff later started their own local ventures.
The Des Moines Weather Bureau said cooler air would reach northern Iowa while the southern half stayed hot and humid through Friday. The nine day heat wave, the worst since 1936, has caused at least 36 deaths, including 69 year old Olive Bolin of Davenport. Temperatures reached 102 in Marengo and Sac City, with lows of 71 at Mason City. A weak cold front would bring scattered thunderstorms to the northwest and northern Iowa, followed by cooler readings through Friday.
A group of touring Russian farm experts shopped in Aberdeen, purchasing conservative sport shirts on a hot day. They visited South Dakota Wheat Growers' Assn elevator, 174 feet high with 550000 bushel capacity, and showed interest in unloading rates and storage. William Forkel reports the Russians answered only “Fine, fine” when asked about life in the United States.

Utility executive Edgar H. Dixon told Senate investigators he stands firmly on his previous testimony about Dixon Yates contract negotiations despite charges of conflicts. Chairman Kefauver questioned details, and Dixon affirmed his stance on the testimony as a whole.

Riverside mourns Mrs. Ernest Roth 76 who died Tuesday after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church Riverside with Rev C D Gar ret officiating and burial in Riverside cemetery. The body will lie in state at Sorden and Adams Riverside funeral home until the service. Kate Prymek born Riverside February 1 1879 married to Ernest Roth January 30 1906. Survivors include husband Everett and two grandchildren Ronald and Reva Jean Roth all of Riverside. She was predeceased by her parents one infant daughter five brothers and four sisters.

Grace Violet McDill, resident at the United Presbyterian home, will read original religious poems at the midweek service at 7 30 p m today. Her work has appeared in church papers including a front cover feature in The United Presbyterian magazine August issue.
Roberta Willits niece of Cloud Willits of Washington is profiled in the Des Moines Tribune. She has been named assistant vice president in charge of the women’s department at the National Bank of Des Moines, a new unit for female customers. She previously served as assistant cashier at the Brenton State Bank in Dallas Center and chairs the Iowa group of the National Association of Bank Women.
Washington County Rural Young People sponsor a tractor rodeo for this year’s county fair at Townsley Park. It starts 1:30 p.m. Monday August 8 with six events for junior and senior divisions. Winners from both groups advance to the state fair. Local dealers and John Patterson and Son supply equipment. Prizes include grease items, a grease gun, oil, gas book and other automotive products.

City officials receive complaints about gunfire in Central Park. Police Chief Ray Stalder says boys and others are forbidden to shoot rifles at birds. only workers under the street commissioner may discharge firearms there. A crew has been firing at birds to deter roosting.
Washington Airport Club met Tuesday to map the Excursion Flight to Lake Toma hawk Wisconsin. Final plans were discussed and members may contact Daryl Burham Gordon Cooper or Wallace Fagen to join. Last year’s trip went to Milo Sorden’s cabin Ely Minnesota with Milo Sorden Max Lee John Lemmon and Wallace Fagen aboard a Piper Family Cruiser.
Washington Jaycees sponsor baton twirling contest as part of the county fair opening events. Entries from across the county accepted for three age divisions. Contest starts at 4 p.m. August 10 with an exhibition at 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds stage.
Many 4 H and FFA livestock entries indicate space may be tight at Townsley Park for the Washing ton county fair opening Monday August 8. Tom Robb county extension director notes exhibits may grow before the fair runs through August 11 with displays in the armory and a range of livestock categories including beef, dairy, swine, sheep, poultry and rabbits plus Colts and Jr. cattle feeders. Plans for Coffee and Donut Day and the annual membership drive were discussed with a September 6 meeting set for next steps.

Tonight will be hot and humid with a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the northwest and extreme north Thursday afternoon or evening. Little change is expected Friday, aside from a risk of scattered thundershowers and cooler north areas.
