John Taber a chemist at the navy Air Missile Test Center in Point Mugu California froze a rattlesnake in summer using a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher after stepping from his lab. He then brought the immobilized snake back to the lab and killed it.
President Eisenhower and other leaders paid a national farewell to Ohio Senator Robert A Taft in the Capitol Rotunda honoring him as a principled public servant. John W Bricker praised Taft calling him Mr Republican as Martha Taft and four sons attended. The 22 minute memorial preceded a flight to Cincinnati for burial Tuesday.
Thirty eight boys registered Sunday for the first Washington YMCA camp at the Youth Center on Lake Darling. Under YMCA secretary Artem Brown the group faces a week of varied activities including swimming boating archery riflery hiking and horseback riding with cabin counselors Dick Fuhr Gus Mast Bill Sherman Eddie Morrison Mrs Artemas Brown and Don Nickerson in the kitchen.
Spencer reports 49 year old Hemmett Dillon of Sioux City charged with first degree murder after his wife Wanda Norene Dillon was found dead in a hotel room with blunt force and strangulation injuries. A companion, Cecil Stockburger, testified Dillon attacked them. Stockburger was also assaulted. a bellhop heard the fight.

Soviet occupation forces and tanks moved toward Berlin to crush anti government protests sparked by hunger marches to the western sector. East German police clashed with demonstrators as food handouts dwindled. rail and road blockades persisted while Berlin saw renewed rioting and arrests. The U.S. and West Germany prepared food relief shipments despite travel restrictions.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles plans to sign a mutual defense pact with South Korea this week to allow U S bases for as long as needed. He arrives with officials for talks with President Syngman Rhee in Seoul aiming to finalize details in four days.
About 220 people attended the open house at the St James rectory on Sunday. Circle leaders retirees and appointees hosted with punch cookies and coffee in the church hall. The rectory has been fully refinished and redecorated with extensive remodeling highlighting natural cherry woodwork and a rebuilt stairway. Forty five volunteers from the parish did the work and new carpeting drapes and other furnishings were donated.

Mrs Ruth Badenoch left for Chicago to visit her sister and plan a Michigan Lake region vacation.
Austin M. Sutherland aged 89 died at 1 a m after months of illness. He lived southeast of Washington for 60 years and was a farmer. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Wednesday August 5 at Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery as Wayland Masonic lodge conducts graveside rites. Survivors include four daughters, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a son and daughter preceded him.
Two Wellman men were arrested at 12 15 a m Sunday by sheriff officers and held in the county jail. Dale Austine Whetstine faced a 5006 bond on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Merle Dean Whetstine was charged with intoxication and held on a 25 bond, later released after posting. The county jail held nine prisoners.
Arnold Carr Lawrence Foster and Myrl Leavitt from Washington state decided to craft a telescope themselves after finding commercial options too costly. Funeral services for Mrs. Nevada M. Speidel, 92, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Jones funeral home with Rev. Walter Smith officiating. Burial follows at Elm Grove cemetery. Delta Alpha Sunday school class members, who she taught for 35 years, will attend as a group. She died August 1 after an illness that began in 1948. She resided at 22 South Iowa Ave. Born July 3, 1861 in Henry County Iowa, she was the daughter of John S. Montgomery and Sarah Co. Montgomery. She married John Oliver Speidel in 1886. he died in 1902. She was active in church, civic affairs, Fortnightly Bible Study, and clubs, and had traveled widely. Survivors include son Joan M. Speidel of Mesa, Ariz., daughter Mrs. John N. Carothers of Atlanta, Ga., three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
Jim Elliott announces a 4-H demonstration workshop at the extension office at 7 p.m. Wednesday for Washington county boys in 4-H clubs. Training aims to prepare teams for selection at the county fair to compete at the State fair.
Mr and Mrs John Knotek attended the Duroc congress at Peoria Illinois on Friday and Saturday of last week. The event drew breeders and judges from the region with emphasis on breed standards and showmanship.
Eisenhower and congressional leaders agreed to wait on September tax collections before raising the national debt limit. They cleared the way for adjournment by tonight, aiming to avoid a special session. Knowland said spending would be curtailed to last until January, debt above 272.5 billion, with a decision after September taxes.
