Charlie the bluepoint Siamese is missing from the John C. Owen home in Washington where Charlie and his brother were staying while Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pleggenkuhle traveled to Germany. Mrs. Owen hopes for a sighting to confirm Charlie’s air freight reservation to join the family in Germany.
Rainfall in Washington over the past 24 hours measured only .18 inch at 7 am with no heavy showers since. Earlier in the week a trace fell totaling .03 inch as fog reduced visibility and kept skies overcast and cool into the afternoon.
Outdoor cooking contest officials announce added pork prizes at the Washington County Fair. The champion pork entry earns $10, runner up $5, and grand champion $25. The cookout is set for Monday evening August 5 at the county fairgrounds with entry blanks at the Farm Bureau building.
Two South-Central Iowa men remained in Dallas County jail in Adel awaiting bond set at $100,000. They are connected to the fatal shooting of an Adel truck stop owner on Tuesday.
Washington UPI reports on Watergate prosecutions: 50 charged, 35 convicted or pleaded guilty, 4 acquitted or had charges dropped, 11 pending. Twelve corporations pleaded guilty to illegal campaign gifts, one acquitted, one awaiting trial.
Governor Robert D. Ray of Iowa will visit Washington on Wednesday August 7 arriving at 4 15 p m. An auto caravan will tour Washington Street Central Park and then reach the fairgrounds where pork sandwiches are served. The stay is expected to last up to 90 minutes with a Republican booth offering literature and voter registration material.
Iowa Farm Bureau urges Congress to cut spending and reduce deficits to fight inflation. An editorial in the Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman says deficits have occurred only six of 43 years and cites nearly 10 billion dollars in proposed cuts including 3 million in defense.
More than 100 balloons will fill the Indianola sky for the 1974 National Hot Air Balloon Championships on the Simpson College campus from today through August 8. Aeronauts from across the United States compete in four events to crown the national champion. The event is sponsored by Balloon Federation of America and Indianola Balloons Inc. in cooperation with Simpson College. Balloons rise and land mainly during 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. daily for seven days.
Area Center workers in Washington County begin a three year pledge campaign to raise 200000 for a new Community Center at the county fairgrounds. A $500000 donor has set a September 6 deadline and plans include theater space and multi use facilities for 4 H and FFA during Fair Week.
John W. Dean III was sentenced to one to four years in prison on a conspiracy count in the Watergate cover up. Judge John J. Sirica imposed the term with no delay, released Dean on personal bond, and ordered he begin serving on Sept. 3 to allow care for his ill mother‑in‑law in California.

Gov. Robert D. Ray asked U S Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz to declare Iowa a disaster area to unlock federal aid. The request aims to evaluate damages by county and provide low interest loans for crop and operating losses after heavy rain, heat and drought. Iowa losses are estimated around 1.6 billion dollars with about 30 percent of corn and soybeans wiped out. Ray planned a tour of Cass Mills and Pottawattamie counties to assess conditions.
Washington officials report labor and management divided on the chance of a nationwide strike by Bell system workers. CWA head Glenn Watts says a strike is likely after a 7 to 1 vote, while AT&T spokesman Chuck Dynes and IBEW’s Robert McAlwee push for continued bargaining to avert a work stoppage.
Convicted rapist Lendell Hunter, once on the FBI’s most wanted list at age 21, was returned to Story County Jail after a federal judge denied bond. He faced a short hearing where U.S. Attorney Danielson detailed three life sentences plus 95 years for multiple offenses, and a Georgia murder charge was noted. Extradition proceedings were discussed with a Friday hearing and a possible week timeline.
Washington Knights of Columbus members will staff the Washington County fairgrounds Tuesday and Wednesday wearing colorful aprons and handing out Tootsie Rolls to solicit donations for mentally retarded residents. Donations support a statewide KC project with 90 percent staying in Washington County.
Don McLaughlin portraying Chris Hughes from As the World Turns visited the Washington Care Center this week. He spent time with residents, including Miss Ethel Britton, at Milo Sorden’s home during the stay. Century celebrant Nelle Long greeted him and spoke of watching the show.
