Des Moines reports a despondent Roy Daniels drank poison after a rejected proposal. The incident occurred as they rode in a car with Pauline May present. Daniels, 28, from St. Charles, died before police and medical help could reach him.
Mrs John Rundlett of Cromwell near Creston turned off her radio after seeing a snake coiled on a window sill while listening to a late afternoon program. She carried her 6 year old son to neighbors, but by the time they arrived the snake had vanished.
Pete a 24 year old Yorkshire Scottish owned by Mr and Mrs Lee H Stewart died due to heat and old age. The dog was buried in the Stewart rear yard and was the oldest in Johnson County per dog tax records.
Tama Dan Hoffman a 74 year old drag operator in Tam a 43 years in the draying business was injured loading a large scroll saw for a contractor. The saw struck his leg pinning his foot tearing ligaments to the hip. He expects to be back on the job in a few days.
Mrs. Harvey Ingham buys 495 acres of farmland two miles west of Commerce Iowa fronting the new primary Highway 90 as an investment. The property adjoins the east 500 acres purchased previously by Hepburn Ingham, son of the couple.
Mrs. Fred Olson of Estherville found 39 four leaf clovers while visiting Frontenac Minnesota and plans to keep them as a good luck omen for her family. She observed several five leaf clovers but avoided picking them as they are said to bring bad luck.
Mae West reportedly avoids drinking smoking or late nights and maintains a strict image as her two stable hands, led by Art Blackwell, defend her reputation while Mae has three horses entered at the Bedford county fair track.
Ben Lang, a Wilton area farmer, suffered severe lacerations to his left leg and hand when a large sow, apparently crazed by heat, charged him in his yard four miles south of Wilton. Lang, who lives with his brother Louis Lang, was alone when the attack occurred.
Pierce Knox is a 15 year old blind student at the Vinton school for the blind. He has become a noted trap drummer and xylophone soloist in the community. During summers he fishes in a nearby creek and plays ball with family, using sound to judge where the ball will land.
Mrs. J N Phillips of Washington dies in Santa Ana California after two days of gallstone pain followed by a stroke. She served a second term on the county hospital board and was active in the Rebekah lodge Baptist church and various community groups. Funeral arrangements are set for Tuesday at 2 30 pm at the Methodist church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
In Santa Monica the column cites Jim Doakes attacking Roosevelt and Woodruff denouncing the New Deal. Col Bohunk warns of Republican rule, and Dr Jasko ridicules affliction treatment as mental illness. The author notes 16 months remain, criticizing lengthy campaigning.
Police say Walter J Bauer an eight year old Cleveland chemistry professor was kidnapped and killed in Chicago after naming Manville Zenka as his attacker before dying He had been forced at gunpoint to drive the suspect from Ann Arbor Michigan where he studied toward Chicago and investigators suspect a jealous suitor of Bauer's bride Louise Schaffer nurse in Kirksville Missouri.
August eased Iowa’s heat with rains boosting crops especially corn. Forecasts predict temperatures in the lower nineties with more moisture likely. Highest readings yesterday reached 97 at Clarinda Lamont and Burlington as thunder showers were forecast in southern and eastern areas.
The official weather observer records July rainfall in Washington at 4.65 inches, a plentiful moisture month. July temperatures ran warm with a low of 60 degrees on the 17th and a high of 100 degrees on the 18th, and 19 days reaching 90 or above. The maximum yesterday noted at the start of August is 4.
Operations completed at the Washington County Home well with testing to confirm a flow of 65 gallons per minute as stipulated by the board of supervisors. Drilling reached over 640 feet after a summer of work and substantial rock difficulty.
At a special meeting the city council voted to reject all bids submitted last Monday evening for surfacing about six miles of dirt streets with crushed rock and a bituminous top. Mandeville Zenge, 26, former suitor of nurse Louise Bauer, was captured in Chicago in connection with the mutilation murder of Dr. Walter Bauer. The physician, kidnapped in Ann Arbor, was brought to Chicago where he died after an operation. Zenge denied involvement as his father confronted him.
The Clay township picnic, an annual event from 1911 to 1926, will be revived this year by local residents. The gathering is set for Thursday August 22 at the grounds near Black Hawk schoolhouse with morning games, a noon basket dinner, and an afternoon program of music and speaking. Committees include Program chaired by Mrs Grace Borkoski and others for Grounds and water, Finance, Decorations, and Sports and games.
Howard G. Richardson resigns as chairman of the Washington county old age assistance board after leading since its 1934 appointment. He remains with the old age pension program as an investigator after qualifying in Mt. Pleasant exams. The county board will appoint his successor. other members are J. A. Marsh of Ainsworth and county welfare worker Miss Alice Teepie.
Geneva reports a deadlock between Great Britain and Italian delegates over the Italian Ethiopian crisis. The League of Nations council meeting was postponed, with private sessions held to hear Premier Laval on negotiation status. Eden, Laval, and Aloisi aligned on a plan telephoned to Mussolini.
County 4 H clubs plan a tour of the Reister plant during the annual club fair next week. The schedule includes a two o clock visit to the American Pearl button factory and a three o clock stop at the Reister plant. Later tours will visit the Mc Cleery calendar factory and the Journal office.
County Agent W J Rouda bush praised newspaper publicity for recruiting a fine team to pull the royal coach in the county 4 H fair parade. William Kendrick near town offered a suitable team of iron gray horses, with harness to be provided by Wittrig harness shop.
Longview plans a statue of founder R A Long if a $30,000 fund drive succeeds. Andre Voisin, a Portland sculptor, would be commissioned to sculpt Jefferson Square statue.
Washington City names its Dollar Days for August 7 and 8 with big signs around the square to promote two days of unusually bargains as merchants ready stock for the county 4 H club fair. The special days committee of the Chamber of Commerce announced the event and full details will appear in Monday's Journal.
