Chinese and North Korean communists demand a cease-fire line along the 38th parallel as talks stall near Kaesong. UN must accept the parallel or the conference will fail, with Pyongyang and Peiping radio channels amplifying the hard stance.
Gen Gruenther told Congress that the Atlantic pact forces need more arms and men to deter Communist aggression in Europe. He warned postponing military aid delays divisions and said spreading the program over two years reduces available divisions by about a quarter. He noted a push for air power and that European morale is rising though people are wary of liberation wars.
Washington High School will start a remedial English program this fall for freshmen with weak foundations. Principal Robert Everetts says the course adds eight weekly hours, smaller classes, and individualized help focusing on speaking reading composition grammar and penmanship to prepare students for sophomore English.
Announcement reports Mr and Mrs Claude Woody Woods purchasing Duke's Coffee Shop from Mr and Mrs A Rommel. Woods has auto parts and restaurant experience and plans to keep Woody's Coffee Shop name with few changes. Rommels will take a vacation before deciding next steps after operating the cafe two years.
Clinton, UP report 13 year old Robert Allen Britt died after a taxicab struck his bicycle. He died en route to a hospital. The cab driver Bruce Miller faces investigation to determine possible charges as witnesses say the cab was speeding and left the scene before returning.

Washington High School will hold its annual Freshman Orientation Day on Tuesday August 21. Principal Robert Everetts says the event welcomes new students from the junior high St James School and country schools with tours and a tour of the building. The student council will explain class scheduling and procedures and assign lockers. Final plans will be made at the student council picnic on August 18.

The nation may seek U.S. help, including delaying the 3.75 billion loan repayments due to begin this year, amid higher import costs and oil worries. A youth killed his father in the Hyde Park Station garage before a surrender. Gerald Riordan shot Andrew Riordan through the base of the skull and fled in a car after the crime. Police nabbed the son near his home still with a .25 caliber pistol.
Whitey Colwell resigns from KNIC radio in Washington and will leave August 10. He plans an extended vacation on Cape Cod and in New England before pursuing any definite future position.
Justice of the peace H. M. Putnam says state officers are cracking down on overloaded trucks passing through Washington. He reports repeated call outs to issue fines with two to three dozen drivers fined in July as heavier penalties follow a legislative revision. Trucks are directed to a scales facility at Washington Lumber and Fuel company near the junction of highways 92 and 218 pending a new weighing station.
Loretta Randell eight year old of New Sharon is recovering at Mercy hospital after accidentally ingesting a number of sleeping pills. The child lost consciousness for hours but is now improving with treatment. Parents Mr Herman Randell and Mrs Randell rushed her to hospital when she became dizzy. The family doctor Dr Kenneth Lemon says the pills were mistaken for something else.
A Los Angeles communist party official warned Reds will go underground if needed to defend 12 second-tier leaders indicted for conspiracy to overthrow the government. Frank Carlson, chair of the Los Angeles Defense committee, said arrests aim to destroy the Communist party and that the group will continue to fight. Carlson, free on bail amid deportation efforts, stated the party will carry on without its leaders, as federal indictments target the second-team including William Schneiderman.
Mrs. Thomas McDowell died Tuesday July 21 at her daughter’s home in Coralville. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Powell Funeral Home with burial in Wellman cemetery. Born October 14 1886 in Iowa County, she was born Anna Barbara Groff and married December 24 1912 to Thomas C Vernies McDowell. She is survived by her husband two children Mrs. Jaynes of Coralville and Francis of Wellman two brothers Louis and George Groff of Wellman and Mrs A C Ruegsegger of Washington.
Levi Dorn died here early today. He was born in May. Funeral services are pending at Jones Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Parrott of Audubon Iowa visited her aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Clyde Pratt in Washington Iowa. Joyce Nielson of Fresno California will also be a guest in the Pratt home.
Washington County Junior Fair board and advisory council set Friday evening at 8 o clock in the art Bureau building to discuss forming a 4 H fair project. With the fair planned for August 5 and 8, several problems will be discussed and decisions made at this week’s meeting.
Washington county farm women prepare a display for the Iowa State Fair with an international theme led by Mrs Ralph Kleese and a committee including Mrs Albert Stoutner Mrs Karl Booth and Mrs Stephen Wiggers. The exhibit focuses on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the importance of food security. It will be moved to Des Moines August 24 and shown for two weeks.
In Korea on Sept 9 1950 First Lt James W Welcher led a 26 man volunteer patrol through rice paddies. He ordered a firing line and ran to aid a wounded scout carrying him to safety earning the Silver Star for gallantry.
Rita Grout five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Karl Grout of Riverside is hospitalized for observation amid a suspected polio diagnosis. Doctors have not yet confirmed the illness but transport to University hospital was made for tests and monitoring.

The United States repatriated a Hesse royal family trove worth 600000 dollars stolen from Kronberg Castle in 1945 by three U S army officers and a WAC captain. The gems, stored in two safes, were delivered to five Hesse princes and princesses after sentences ranging from three to fifteen years.

Frank L. Armstrong 72, a longtime farmer near Conesville, died Tuesday after a period of illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Stephens funeral home with burial in Columbus City cemetery. Born July 12, 1879 in Salem, he was survived by his widow Rosamond De Vore, five sons, two daughters, two brothers, two sisters and many grandchildren.
Dave Livingston Jr and Arnold on a spraying run along a county road near the Big Glassburner farm northeast of Washington report finding wild potato vines blooming in a ditch. The discovery yielded two or three bushels of what locals call tree potatoes grown after garbage was dumped in the ditch.
