Des Moines reports increased steel allotments for farm machinery reach Iowa. A J Loveland chair of the Iowa War Board says shipments of labor saving units rise as counties receive larger quotas. He notes a easing of the tight machinery situation and more equipment expected.
The seventh annual memorial service for Oran Henry Pape, Iowa state highway patrolman slain in 1936, was held by the patrol at Linwood Cemetery. Pape, a former University of Iowa football star, was shot near Fairport on April 29, 1936, by Roscoe Barton, a 23 year old Davenport bandit on probation from a federal sentence, who was killed after Pape wrested the revolver from him.
Marshall Bern Habens, 87, of Iowa Falls faces charges for threatening Hardin County draft board chairman Frank M. Cottrell after his reclassification to 1 A. Federal agent J. L. Dalton notes Habens purchased a flax-planted farm last year and recently moved there.
Donald H. Minick of Washington, after completing flight training last November, received a War Department notice about his status. The letter from Capt. Neil O. Davis states that air corps enlisted reservists who took the ACER course are not being activated for glider pilot duty and directs Minick to choose another training or be released. He is advised to act by June 1 and consider steps to remain in the air branch if possible.
Wildcat strikes in major soft coal regions spread beyond 75 000 to 86 000 miners out of 450 000 as President Roosevelt demands an end by 10 a m tomorrow. UMW leader John L Lewis after talks in New York sent an inconclusive reply urging resumption of contract negotiations with operators. Lewis argued the War Labor Board cannot fairly decide under the little steel ceiling formula.
The Fortnightly club music department plans National Music Week programs next week. Members present an eight o’clock Monday program at United Presbyterian Church. The high school mixed chorus directed by Boyd White performs Tuesday at the high school auditorium. Both programs are open to the public. Wednesday at 4 20 Carolyn Hamilton will present her voice pupils in a recital at United Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Isabell Deal 66, wife of Thomas C. Deal, died at five this morning after three years of ill health. Funeral services set for 2:30 Saturday at the Christian Tabernacle with Rev. Michae Stevens in charge. burial at Kim Grove cemetery. Born April 9 1877 in Clay township, she lived in Washington County all her life, last 24 years in Washington. Survived by husband and five children, including Charles Deal of Gary Indiana and Leonard Deal of Ottumwa, plus siblings and a U.S. Army son stationed in Iceland. services and church affiliation noted.
The office of price administration announced an April 30 update raising points for sixteen prime cuts of beef veal and pork and reducing points for 25 variety meats canned fish and other products effective after 12:01 AM May 2. Officials cited heavy demand for sea meats and smaller portions as causes. Five steak cuts including round and flank gained one point each.
Government print Office issues a table of point values for meat fats fish and cheese effective May 2 1943. It covers spiced luncheon meat spiced ham chopped ham and chopped pork including those not removed from containers. Excludes bulk purchases over five pounds subdivided or not.
Director Ralph Young announces the annual spring band concert at the Washington high school auditorium this evening at 7 45 featuring pieces by the junior and senior bands. A large audience is expected with music including Bealing A War Medley Mirella Overture Gounod Daphnis Overture Holmes Boogie Woogie Band Pestalozza Fair Chicago and The Star Spangled Banner.
Members anticipate next Sunday morning service with former pastor Dr U S Smith as guest speaker. Smith served fifty years in Iowa conference pastorates except 1919 1927 when he led Iowa Wesleyan College as president. He previously led Washington Methodist Church.
Ensign Loren L. Hickerson of the St. Louis naval aviation cadet selection board will visit Washington next Monday May 8 to address 10 17 year old high school graduates or seniors about the aviation program. He will speak in room 12 at the high school from nine in the morning.
American and British troops pushed gains on the northeastern Tunisia front as the fight centered on a key height 21 miles west of Tunis. US Second Corps and British Eighth Army reported progress on both allied flanks while Montgomery’s forces pressed south of Tunis and artillery targeted Mateur. The Axis defense remained strong around the Djebel Bou Aoukaz in a stubborn battle.
