Farm Field and Garden Compare Corn Planting Methods
A Kansas experiment compares surface planting with listed corn over four seasons, noting surface planting yields higher by 6.65 bushels per acre and 469 pounds per acre in wet years, while listing excels in drier seasons. Early listing boosts yields by 5.02 bushels per acre versus no early cultivation, with advantages in water conservation and weed control. Attachments like disk furrow openers offer listing benefits with fewer drawbacks. A gun once owned by General Joseph Lane, named Buena Vista, is now held by Dr. K C Taylor of Carmi after passing through three generations of the Taylor family. Weighing thirteen pounds and made in Cincinnati in the early 1830s, the weapon was presented to Andrew Jackson Taylor by Lane at a Warrick county reunion, and later handed down to his son and grandson. Railroad Notes Show Cutback Pressure Across Lines
Burlington section force stands at six. L E Severance, Rock Island traveling freight agent, was in town on business yesterday. Dennis Webster, formerly of here, now engineers the Branch passenger during Metugin’s absence. Several Milwaukee conductors and engineers have moved to Montana for Pacific Coast extension jobs. Trains run within eighty miles of Butte as many secure passenger runs. Railroads push to slash running expenses, officials ordered to a target or be replaced. Across systems, switch crews and trainmen face layoffs, and office staff thinning continues. Rumors say Rock Island may eliminate the trainmaster office and the Knoxville branch may join the Missouri division, implying local service changes. Further developments will be watched.
