Havana Radio reports 50 Havana University medical school alumni expelled for counter revolution activity. Some identified with the invasion force. others fled Cuba. Radio Voz also notes arrival of ships with supplies and calls for a May Day parade.
Katanga warns the UN that any effort to move President Tshombe from confinement risks a civil war. Vice President Kibwe and Katanga's foreign minister warn of plans to shuttle Tshombe to Stanleyville amid Gizenga influence and Lumumba's legacy.
William Graham Morgan a Pepperdine College junior and Washington High School graduate has been named senior class president for 1961 62. The 21 year old history major is son of Mr and Mrs S C McCleery of Washington and active in Pi Gamma Mu chorus SCTA International Relations Club and the Pollagrammatic Society.
Gov Hisashi Amano of Yamanashi prefecture arrives in Des Moines for a five day stay as Iowa's sister state through an act of the legislature. The visit aims to strengthen goodwill and promote exchange of views and products between the states. Amano noted Japan has received 36 purebred pigs to start a breeding herd to boost a red meat economy. Governor Norman A Erbe voiced hope for more similar projects and international understanding during a joint news conference. Amano will address a joint session of the Iowa legislature Monday before continuing his three month world tour ending Wednesday.
Linda Joyce Jones 18 and Kenneth W. Houston 19, sweethearts from William S. Hart high, quarreled over marriage plans last weekend. Jones died in a car plunge on a canyon road near Newhall. Houston killed himself at the same spot with a 22 rifle, a bullet to the temple, after telling a brother he would go hunting.
Kistner and two Northern Biochemical officials convicted of mail fraud and conspiracy by a federal jury in Sioux City Iowa. Sentencing possible up to five years and fines up to ten thousand per count. The case ties to Burnice Geiger's two million dollar bank embezzlement and Sheldon Iowa business prominence.
President Kennedy and the National Security Council held a crisis meeting at the White House to decide on allied military action in Laos as Communist gains mounted. Rusk flew in, allies pressed Russia, and SEATO pledged possible aid while a Geneva peace effort continued.
Laos government sent a 1,500 man peace mission to Ban Khy for cease fire talks with Pathet Lao, but rebels did not appear. Artillery fire continued though no large attacks were reported as both sides kept the civil war ongoing.
Mrs Mary Ellen Fulton 80 will be laid to rest Sunday at 3 30 PM in Powell Funeral Home Keota with Rev Robert Burns presiding. Interment follows at Keota Cemetery. A longtime Keota resident she died Thursday at Shenk Rest Home Wellman after a three week stay.
Bob Waterhouse, a farmer near Dublin, was injured Friday morning while felling a timber on Dewey Kauffman’s land. He was taken to Washington County Hospital in good condition. his son Jim 19 assisted and helped transport him after the accident.
Local sheriff officials investigate a break-in at an automatic laundry in Riverside Friday night. The thief forced the front door and stole an automated coin changer containing about $30. The business closed at 10 p.m. and opened this morning.
Promising a bold milestone, NASA prepares to launch a Redstone powered Mercury flight next Tuesday from Cape Canaveral. The 15 minute suborbital mission reaches 115 miles high and 4 500 mph, with recovery by aircraft carrier after splashdown in the Atlantic. The mission marks the start of man’s space exploration era under Project Mercury.
ALGIERS Algerian affairs minister Lous Joxe and top French officials plan a government reshuffle to purge anti De Gaulle elements after a failed four day insurrection. Gen Michel Gouraud was jailed in Paris for organizing an armed movement. Arrests and weapon turn in followed as officers and officials faced purge across Algeria.
Civil defense chief Frank B. Ellis warned that many would die in a simulated nuclear strike due to lack of knowledge on fallout response. The 1961 operation faced protests in several states while Kennedy urged readiness. A three megaton blast hit near Andrews AFB and a 10 megaton near Dulles Intl in Virginia during the exercise.

He spoke at a $100-a-plate dinner, saying the desire for freedom keeps nations willing to sacrifice for independence.
