Two blasts hit a Jewish center and James Weldon Johnson Junior High in Jacksonville, likely by the Confederate underground. No injuries reported. damage about 2000 dollars. threats target Jews and integration.
In Rome a 35 minute operation amputated the right arm of Samuel Cardinal Stritch due to a blood clot. The 70 year old Chicago archbishop was reported in very good condition after surgery at Sanatrix Clinic with a four doctor team led by Prof. Pietro Valdoni and joined by Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi Filippo Rocchi and two Chicago physicians.
A 20-year-old gang leader confessed to fatally shooting 17-year-old rival Michael Ramos after a dispute sparked by a rival look. Ramon Serra was arrested with a loaded pistol and gave a signed confession. Bronx DA Daniel V. Sullivan plans to seek first degree murder indictments, with potential death penalty exposure. The killing followed the shooting of a Serra ally by Ramos’ gang, complicating the motive.
Funeral services for William W. Prebyl 78 of nine miles northeast of Washington will be Tuesday at 10 a m at Jones Funeral Home. Burial in Riverside Cemetery. Rosary tonight at 7:30. Rev J E Grubb in charge. He took his own life by shooting Sunday morning April 27 1958. Born February 24 1880 in Washington County. Survived by wife two daughters Mrs H F Bleifuss and Mrs Adolph Shalla and five grandchildren.
William Laughlin Wade 78 died at 7 a m Monday at his Richland home after a stroke. Funeral 2 p m Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home Richland with Rev Edward Philgreen officiating. Burial in Richland Friends Cemetery. Survived by wife Harriet, daughter Florine Acheson of Ollie, one grandson, brother Herbert of Chetopa Kan. He was born December 31 1879 near Chetopa and married Harriet Mable Pever October 28 1893.
John V. Phieger, principal of Washington High School, is named administrative assistant to superintendent M. M. Schell for the coming school year. He will take on many supervisory duties in elementary schools. Phieger has 10 years in the local system, served as junior high teacher, junior high principal, and Washington High principal since 1956. He holds a bachelor and master from the State University of Iowa and has completed substantial graduate work toward a doctorate in supervision and elementary administration.
Washington High School music students earned eight Division I ratings and 14 Division II ratings at the state soloists and small ensembles contest in Belle Plaine. Directors Robert Ferrell and Alan Bergstrom noted tougher judging this year as local performers received scores across brass, woodwind, vocal, and percussion entries.
Washington Methodist Church workers to participate in the annual canvass are urged to attend a training meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the church. Tom Robb organizational chairman and assistant Bill Jensen announced plans with Joe Knotek as general chairman and Keith Vetter directing publicity. Division leaders and captains are urged to alert workers and attend tomorrow night.
Mrs. Ben M. Miller 59 of Kalona died Sunday morning at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Mennonite Church with Rev. Elmer Swartzendruber. Burial Fairview Cemetery. Survived by husband four daughters one son and eleven grandchildren.
London reports Britain urged the United States and France to include Poland and Czechoslovakia in pre summit talks with Russia. Western powers wary of parity as Britain seeks a summit, while U.S. and France stay cool.
CIA chief Allen W. Dulles warned at a U S Chamber of Commerce luncheon that Soviet industrial progress poses the most serious peace time challenge to the United States. He cited 1958 first quarter gains in the Soviet bloc, steel oupacing the US, and higher Russian coal and machine tool output. He warned recession harms U S prestige abroad.
Three youths aged 19 and four others were injured when their car avoided two tractors on a Clinton gravel road and crashed in a ditch. Names include Ralph Outzen Donna Proulx and Marlys Robert all of Clinton plus injured Eugene Henricksen Donald Henricksen Ronald Dixon and Robert Luther of rural Clinton. Coroner to hold inquest Tuesday.
The Air Force admitted a mouse aboard a nose cone of a combined Thor Vanguard rocket test at Cape Canaveral did not survive or return with the cone. The cone was not recovered after liftoff, while plans for a Dynasoar orbital aircraft and moon strikes with existing hardware were discussed.
Ottumwa police arrested two Ottumwa youths, Keith Fisher 17 and Arthur Lynch 19, after they were found boarding a Chicago bound bus at 3 15 this morning. The pair admitted breaking into a grocery store and two other Ottumwa sites, taking over 500 dollars in cash and checks before fleeing in a car later abandoned in Hedrick. They will be returned to Ottumwa after authorities arrived to transfer custody.
Sam Weeks as general chairman calls a 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting of the Memorial Day committee at city hall in Washington. Representatives from all local patriotic organizations are urged to attend to plan this year’s observance.
Gov. Herschel C. Loveless expressed hope for a united community response to his juvenile behavior drive. He reported statewide participation for an Iowa Conference on Juvenile Behavior and announced a new council to coordinate youth efforts with state agencies. Speakers include Sanford Bates Katharine Lenroot and Roy C. Votan.
In Cape Canaveral the Navy’s Vanguard rocket aims for an early week lift with a 20 inch satellite in its nose. After weekend checks to address two prior launch failures last week a new launch day has not been announced.
