In Chicago Steven Robinson ten and his brother Ronald tested their new canteens. The boys' grandmother called firemen after fingers were stuck in the necks. Firemen carefully smashed the canteens to free each finger.
Washington High School vocal and instrumental students competed in the state music contest for small groups and soloists from Class B schools. Judges assess divisions I through III with solos, ensembles, and vocal selections led by Melvin Hill and Robert Ferrell.
The Agriculture Department moves to boost dairy farmer income by cancelling seasonal reductions in fluid milk prices across 37 marketing areas. It restores cuts already in effect and delays others until May 1, with prices pegged up to 50 cents per 100 pounds above summer rates. Estimates place the effect at 11 to 12 million dollars for farmers in the affected regions.
Senator Al Gore predicts the Senate will replace the House highway bill with an $18 billion five year program. The House passed a $51.5 billion 13 year plan with gas tax hikes. Senate action likely in two weeks after Finance and Public Works committees review tax features and construction provisions.

Rosetta M Mapel born August 19 1900 in Washington County died earlier this year at age 55. She married Charles E Ashby in 1918 and lived in the county all her life. Survivors include her husband a daughter Martha Shaver a son David Ashby six grandchildren and one son Harold preceded her in death. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home Rev Walter Smith officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
The Siamese twin daughters Shelly Ann and Shirley Ann Neubauer died today in the Fargo hospital incubator where they had been kept since birth. Hospital spokesmen called the deaths a surprise as their condition had been reported good on Friday.
Warsaw reports a new foreign minister, Adam Rapacki, appointed to replace Stanislaw Skrzeszewski. Rumors say Skrzeszewski may become secretary of the council of state as Poland's Communist leadership reshapes key posts and dispatches several officials.
City hostess Mrs. R. E. Taylor visits new residents in Washington welcoming two families. The Minicks from Las Vegas Nevada reside at 1104 East Adams Street with sons Bob and Dale aged 9 and 7. They attend the Christian Church and enjoy bowling. Mr Minick works as a bricklayer and is Ralph Minick’s son. The Granewalls from Quincy Illinois live at 418 East Third Street. Mr Granewall is a watchmaker at Grecians with son Jack.
The White House plans to implement business-type cost accounting across government to curb spending and speed up budgeting. Clarence Francis of the Hoover Committee says 22 percent of the commission's recommendations are adopted, with savings projected over years. The second Hoover Commission filed its final report last June 30.

A Friday night storm swept across Washington County injuring two and causing thousands in damage. A tornado ripped a one quarter mile wide swath south of Washington toward Cotter, while hail damaged farms north of Washington from Wellman to Bethel and north of Ainsworth. House trailer overturns, two women hurt, one trapped. Koehler farm fire blamed on windstorm, destroying granary barn hog houses and 12 pigs. Firefighters battled the blaze aided by Max Owen’s dozer.
House Republican Leader Joseph W Martin Jr said administration forces demand pre payment provisions in a new farm bill's soil bank. He has not reviewed the Democratic Cooley bill and notes the committee plans to approve it. The plan centers on a 1.2 billion dollar soil bank and excludes pay-in-advance despite administration push. Farm prices rose 1 percent in the month to April 15 while costs also rose 1 percent, keeping farmers' real return at 82 percent of fair price parity.
About 1 150 firefighters battled the Lincoln National Forest blaze that burned 15 000 acres with 10 000 acres destroyed. Firelines 10 to 30 feet wide held the fire within reach of Sacramento as bulldozed slopes halted it. additional crews from Holloman AFB and 150 Mescalero Apache fighters joined 30 local volunteers.
A mass of cold air brought rain snow and hail to Iowa with hail as large as hen eggs hitting Preston and surrounding areas causing shattered windows broken utilities and car damage. Over 200 windows were broken in the Preston school and stained glass at churches damaged. Damage could reach about 50000 with hail extending six miles north south and twenty miles east of Preston. Rainfall totals included 173 in Brookyn 162 at Walford and 100 at Clarence while temperatures plunged from 80s 90s to near freezing across the state.
London papers claim Scotland Yard foiled a European anti Communist plot to kill Khrushchev and Bulganin during their Britain tour. Reports say four would be assassins were chosen by drawing straws on the continent and that refugees faced tightened entry checks.
Mr and Mrs Dewey Stephens near Cotter describe a fast moving windstorm that swept just south of their farm delaying them with a 5 30 pm rain then a roaring cloud racing toward their land they fled at 70 mph to outrun the wind. The storm veered southeast before reaching their farm causing four barns to collapse nearby and heavy damage.
Three of four Soviet sailors who refused the ambassador to go home testified to a Senate subcommittee. The four refused return while five others fled to the United States last fall. The United States expelled two Soviet UN officers and rebuked Arkady Sobolev for involvement.
Insurance agent Paul Irwin of Norton reports a billy goat at his collection call site chewed his personal mail and a windshield sticker, and started to chew the front seat of his car. The incident left Irwin shaken as the goat continued its nibbling.
