Nine year old Lee Synnot brings his report card home to his father J Bruce Synnot after a teacher notes he is careless in his spelling.
Former Marquette football player Glenn Chernick, 23, was arrested in Chicago as a suspect in a fatal St. Louis bank holdup. One bandit killed himself, two others wounded. a fourth man, the getaway driver, fled. Chernick was held for federal authorities after being routed from his parents’ home and refusing to talk. The fugitive “Joe” allegedly led the operation and warned the crew to expect death if captured.
More than 200 Waterloo high school students walked out to protest the school board’s choice to stay on standard time while Waterloo uses daylight saving time. They accuse farmer members of pushing for milking schedules, noting rural areas do not observe daylight time. Board members voted four to three to remain on standard time, citing early wake times for rural children. Marcellus Hartmann, the farmer board president, leads the 15 schools in the district.
Grieving parents prepare for burials after a flash fire and explosion at a frame home injure eight children. The victims include five Derry children and three Trudel children under care of the Derrys. A wooden shield behind the stove ignited, trapping youngsters as smoke and flames spread.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said the 14 nation meeting on Western European defense produced good hard practical results and called the talks very successful and realistic. He arrived from Paris with George M. Humphrey and Harold E. Stassen and planned to brief President Eisenhower and Congress on the outcome.
Fourteen new vehicles were registered in Washington county during the past week. Registrants include John of Clara, Flading of Wellman, O E Latta of Riverside, Clyde M Goodwin of Washington, Leo Vittetoe of Washington, John Downs of Washington, Charles A Marek of Kalona, George C Birney of Washington, R J Coon of Washington, Livingston Patterson Spray Co of Washington, Robert A Frink of Washington, Elwyn E Miller of Wellman, Grant M Humble of Washington, Ellis Rickey of Wellman, and Ardell Miller of Wellman.
Washington County Extension Development committee meets at the Farm Bureau building to finalize the annual extension program starting October 1 1955. Chairman Herbert Campbell of Ainsworth leads with members Mrs T E Tuttle Mrs James Birney Milton Ross Willard Palmer and Mrs Earl Booth. Also present are Harvey Holden Farm Bureau president and Mrs A K Stoutner county women’s chair. Subcommittees had drafted suggestions for division plans to be integrated into the coming year program.
Plans move forward for a Washington county 4-H delegation to Wyoming July 19 to 28. Assistant county extension director Max Wall reports 60 members expressed interest, with invitations extended from Wyoming. Anyone 14 or older who is interested should contact the extension office promptly.
Tom Berkeley Iowa Conservation Commission area game manager and Dwight Bramon local conservation officer will lead a fox trapping school at the Glen Thompson farm south of Washington Tuesday from 9 to 12. The session, arranged with Tom Robb county extension director, aims to help farmers rid premises of foxes harming chickens turkeys and other livestock. All interested farmers invited.
Jim Elliott and county youth at the extension office help county 4 H officers draft plans for a county wide club observance of Rural Life Sunday on June 7. Clubs are urged to make group contributions to the religious services in their churches that date.
An Army official said the first planeload of American soldiers freed by the Communists in Korea will be home by week’s end. Medical exams tests and intelligence questioning delay clearance at two Tokyo Army hospitals. many soldiers expect to reunite with families after better food and care.
Principal John Phieger announces the Eleventh Annual Nation wide Children's Clothing Crusade in public schools. The drive seeks warm clean clothing for needy children in Korea Europe Lebanon and U S rural areas including the Navajo and Papago Reservations. Bundles of warm clothing and shoes are requested with care to keep items clean and usable. Contact any of eight local students to donate.
Funeral services for W P Davidson were conducted at 2 p m Saturday at the Federated church in Crawfordsville with Rev Earnest Smith presiding. Music was provided by a quartet and Mrs David White accompanied on piano. pallbearers named include John Mitchell Earl Munson R W Howell Latimer Davis Kenneth Rhea and Clarence Her.
The 134th anniversary of Odd Fellowship was observed Saturday at the Keota Odd Fellows hall. Delegates from Washington attended, with Leona Stokka of Ames and other assembly officers present. Entertainment included songs dances and skits. Evening activities featured Rebekahs at the high school for initiation and Washington men performing degree work in the hall followed by a dance at the Legion hall.
United Nations planes conducted day long attacks on North Korea with a 650 ton strike targeting an ammunition factory near Chinnampo. The operation included F 86 Sabrejets, Superforts, B 26s and night fighters striking coastal and inland targets, destroying munitions and food, and blocking roads with dozens of trucks.
An evangelistic rally for Southeastern Iowa will be held at the First Baptist Church in Washington on Wednesday evening April 29 at 7 30 p m. Sponsored by the Heaven and Home Hour radio program the event features Rev and Mrs Clarence Erickson of Chicago and Rev and Mrs Howard Skinner with the Merv Rosell Evangelistic party. Clarence Erickson directs the Heaven and Home Hour broadcasts over WHO Des Moines and recently returned from a South American tour. A free will offering will be taken and the public is invited.
Three Keokuk boys aged 8 to 13 confessed to thefts totaling 600 dollars over the weekend. An 8 and 11 year old took 500 dollars from a safe drawer at Keasling drug store Friday night, with a 13-year-old admitting 1000 dollars from the same drawer Thursday and revealing the key. All three later admitted stealing cars and shoplifting.
Burial was held at Crawfordsville Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The fragment notes the funeral details and the firm responsible for services.
Washington High School lists senior candidates for graduation next month. Commencement is May 28 at the Methodist church with Dr. Newton E. Moats as speaker. Baccalaureate is May 24 with Dr. E. L. Haney. Class day is May 22.
Washington high school musicians earned ten Division I ratings at the state contest in Iowa City. Of 15 entries, ten received top marks with six Division I and four Division II in the instrumental section and four Division I vocal ratings led by Robert Ferrell. Notable Division I performers include Dan Brindley and Margarette McCleery in multiple instrumental solos and quartets, plus Margie McCleery and Janice Booth in choral items directed by Melvin Hill.
Loyal Order of Moose members in Washington lodge will install officers Tuesday at 8 o clock. Luncheon will be served after the meeting.

CIO United Steelworkers Union officials in Atlantic City begin a conference to draft wage proposals to be delivered to the steel industry later this week. The 34 member executive board and 170 member wage policy committee meet as the union plans to notify the industry 60 days before the current contract’s wage reopening. The contract runs to June 30, 1954, with bargaining limited to wages this year. A USW spokesman said details of the demands may not be disclosed during the meeting.
Mrs. Effie Mapes learned her son Sgt. Harry A. Cutting of Belle Plaine was released by the Communists at Panmunjom Korea. Cutting joined after high school and re enlisted in 1949. His mother, widowed recently, had two other sons serving in the armed forces.
The spire of Salisbury Cathedral rises to 404 feet making it Britain’s tallest. Norwich Cathedral follows as the next highest at 320 feet.
Deputy Defense Secretary Roger M. Kyes accused the Truman administration of waste and poor planning in defense mobilization. Speaking to the U S Chamber of Commerce he faulted prewar cuts and rushed postwar mobilization and urged sound management and a complete program review. He signaled Republicans will revise the broad mobilization base and improve efficiency.
President Eisenhower signed an executive order to replace the Truman loyalty program with tougher security testing. The order, effective in 30 days, directs agencies to implement strict programs to weed out subversives and prevent careless handling of secrets.
Des Moines reports increasing cloudiness tonight with possible showers in extreme south central. Tomorrow remains cloudy with occasional rain and warmer temperatures in the east. Lows around 34 to 40 east and 38 to 48 west tonight, highs near 54 to 58, with little change Wednesday.
