UPI reports U S military chiefs told a House subcommittee that 84 attack jets faced 70 MiGs but none arrived in time to contest the Pueblo seizure. Factors included missing mission briefs, wrong armament, and lack of tactical bomb racks. Wheeler said procedures are being reviewed to protect intelligence missions.
United Press International reports 18 million dollars in property damage from central and northwestern Iowa floods. President Nixon declares a disaster area and authorizes 750 thousand for public facilities repairs. Gov. Ray says 11 more counties may join the declaration. Wisconsin seeks aid for 15 counties. Mississippi crest nears Muscatine as dikes and levees limit damage. Davenport reports 19.1 feet, one of the river’s highest crests. The scene contrasts with 1965 flood devastation.
Local actors prepare to present Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park in Washington with performances May 7 through 10. The cast includes Ed Augustine and Gwyn as the young lawyer and bride, Wilma Butler as the mother, Charles Morris as a repairman, Dave Elder as the attic neighbor, and Jerry King as a delivery man. Rev Ralph Abernathy sat behind bars in Charleston as part of a 100 person protest near the South Carolina Medical College Hospital. He and others were charged with violating a court order limiting pickets to 10 people and 20 yard spacing. Abernathy chose jail over bond, while 49 others were arrested after singing while being taken into police vehicles.
On a tense Ithaca scene Cornell University faces ongoing turmoil after militants seized Straight Hall last Sunday, with 15 armed militants among those who left the building after 36 hours. Afro-American Society spokesman Tom Jones rejected disarmament despite a plea from President James Perkins. Across other colleges, protests include building occupations, shutdown plans, and pushes for anti-arm carrier laws.
Des Moines police began dragging operations in the Des Moines River after Dennis Prince reported that a companion from Upper Iowa College leaped into the river from the Interstate 235 bridge early today. The driver lost control of a car on the Pennsylvania Avenue ramp, then fled as they walked to the bridge where the companion handed over rings before jumping.
An intercepted memo from Des Moines shows House members discussing a measure and a possible stance implied by the message. The note questions support for a “no truck” policy and reflects internal positions. Signoff appears as WEJ.
U S infantry at Frontier City 45 miles northwest of Saigon repelled a major North Vietnamese assault after the base built as bait drew attackers from Cambodia. American troops reported 157 enemy bodies found, six wounded prisoners captured, and praise for Capt. Ray Pulliam and Maj. Harry Ray as battle ended.
A U S Air Force EC121 intelligence plane crashed on takeoff in a rainstorm at Korat Air Base Thailand killing all 18 crew. The four-engine propeller craft, part of Vietnam era reconnaissance activity, exploded in a rice paddy near Ban Mai. No civilians injured. wreckage removed by military police as a board investigates.
Opponents forced a delay in House consideration of a bill raising truck fees by 20 to 33 percent. Rep. Ralph McCartney said the delay aimed to avoid quorum problems as Friday session ended. The measure would bring about $8 million yearly and includes an amendment boosting city share of the road tax fund to 15 percent.
