Frank J. Donohue 55 of Palo Alto received a $100 fine in San Jose for drawing state unemployment benefits while employed as a bill collector. He argued he sought unemployment pay due to insufficient earnings to cover his own bills.
The Townsley Park Fair association board approved plans for the 1956 county 4 H club fair at the county extension office. The event will run at the park from August 6 to 9 with livestock premiums raised to 2450 dollars split to 1850 for livestock and 600 for home economics. The livestock committee has chosen judges and department supervisors.
Premier Bulganin and Khrushchev land in Edinburgh after a 10 day London talks tour. They tour sights, meet Labour leaders, and prepare a communique with Eden outlining limited gains and call for peace in the Middle East.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade committee met at Mrs. Emma Barnett's home this morning to discuss Ridiculous Day in early June. Harold Johnson leads this year’s efforts with Gene Tucker Milton Barker and Bill Perdock as fellow committee members. Tucker reported on the used car auction and safe held April 18. The meeting was open to all local businessmen.
Washington Moose Lodge No. 543 installs new officers at a meeting led by Governor Forrest Mitchell. Hubert Wilson becomes lodge governor with Dale Sheetz as junior governor, Alfred Stalder prelate, Fred Franklin secretary, Ameal Chabal trustee, Hubert Walker treasurer, Wilbur Hysell inner guard, Carol Straube outer guard, and Forrest Mitchell serving as installing officer. A plaque of friendship and fraternalism is presented to retiring governor Mitchell.
The Iowa Development Commission reports manufacturing output in 1955 at about 3.932 billion dollars, surpassing farm products at roughly 1.853 billion. This marks the sixth consecutive year manufacturing led Iowa's economy.
About 271 women from 38 Iowa City churches attended the Presbyterian meeting in the First Presbyterian Church while around 100 ministers and laymen joined the Presbytery session at the First Baptist Church. Mrs. William J. Grossheim presided over the day, with Rev John A. Lewis moderating. Out of town speakers included Mrs. Laverne Sandy, Mrs. Catherine Marsh, and Mrs. Wayne Overhoser. The joint communion ended the meetings, a luncheon followed in YMCA facilities and the church dining room. New officers include Rev. Jerome Leksa as moderator and Mrs. Roy Maclain as presbyterial president, with Mrs William Burney as vice president.
Hollywood actor Edward Arnold died at his home from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 66. Born Guenther Schneider in New York, he rose from stage to film, appeared in over 40 pictures, and starred in Okay, America his first sound film. He was married twice and had three children Elizabeth William and Dorothy Jane.
Mr and Mrs Marion Hall formerly of Grand Junction Iowa move to Washington. He becomes manager of the Quaker Oats Feed Store and they will occupy a Washington apartment by June 1. Neal Hall plans to join local school activities after term end.
C S Lemmon and his son John Lemmon announce changes in ownership of Lemmon Jewelry and Lemmon Optometry. John A Logan becomes jewelry partner, Joan Lemmon takes full ownership of optometry, while C S Lemmon keeps active in management. Logan has 14 years with the store and is a registered watchmaker.
The McCleery Cumming Co announces the purchase of about five acres along the C B and Q railroad in Washington for a new calendar factory. The site, east of the Finney home, allows expansion and ample parking as architects begin planning. The Washington Industrial Corporation has raised funds toward a $100 000 industrial promotion goal, with employees of the firm contributing to stock purchases.
In Washington, Republican leaders say the Democratic plan to pay farmers direct subsidies, totaling up to 500 million dollars this year, cannot pass Congress and will be vetoed by Eisenhower if brought up. The measure would be voted in the House Agriculture Committee next week as part of a broader soil bank bill.

Bert Nolin and Wayne Rogers of Des Moines spoke on the swine lease program and noted more than 2000 gifts are already leased to farmers.
Mrs. Nora Rupp died at noon today at her daughter Edna Nicola’s home at 509 West Jefferson Street. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Smith, burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born January 25, 1863 in Knox County Ohio and married Eldo Rupp in 1885. Survivors include her daughter Mrs Nicola, son Clarence Rupp of Sioux Falls, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. one daughter Wilma is deceased.
Leonard Lundberg, 35, a parolee, confessed to killing 21-year-old teacher Patricia Burdick near Seney Michigan. He led police to her body four miles from the hitchhiking site and gave no motive. an autopsy was ordered to check for assault. The girl taught near Grand Marais and was returning from Sault Ste. Marie when slain.

Warren J. Nutter Jr., 18, Freeport Illinois, appeals to the Iowa Supreme Court over his death sentence for the slaying of Independence policeman Harold Pearce. Nutter pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced February 10 with a guilt hearing. If executed he would be the second youngest on Iowa’s gallows. James Dooley was hanged in 1894.
Funeral services for Mina Bullis 86 of Conesville will be held at the Conesville Evangelical and Reformed Church at 1 30 p m Saturday. Rev. Lee Martin will officiate with burial in Conesville cemetery. Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction handled arrangements.
Washington County Sheriff Charles Snyder warns residents after an aged Riverside man was robbed of 55 in quarters by two men posing as stove repairmen. The suspects spoke a foreign language, drove a gray Chevrolet, and fled after a dispute over payment.
