Chicago police prepare to target 28 “public enemies” named by the crime commission in a drive dubbed the hoodlum elimination. Deputy Commissioner John Stege seeks federal help through prosecutions of beer and liquor conspiracies and tax evasions to aid the campaign.
Washington reports that Senate politics split over John J. Parker's supreme court nomination with Senator Overman threatening to resign as floor leader and southern Democrats planning abstentions to block the vote. Party leaders warn Parker needs GOP backing, while Overman says only a Republican can lead the defense.
Workers with picks and trucksmen tear down the foundations of the old Me sonic Temple building. Preparations signal the start of preliminary construction on the new Temple Building planned to begin soon.

Mrs Edith Miller received notice of the death of her cousin Dr J M Smith of Salem Oregon. He died suddenly on April 20. He was born seventy seven years ago in this county and was the son of Newton and Nancy Young Smith. He left with his parents for Oregon in 1874. Several older residents recall him.
The season starts next Tuesday at 2 PM featuring the American-Canadian Clowns led by Hap Wilson against the Chicago Giants, a match billed for mirth and class. Carl Libe notes the grounds are fine though some wind damage remains. the roof on the grandstand will be completed later.

In Willesden England the wife of a bus driver told the police magistrate her husband deserted her without explanation. She cited his single act of courtesy was stopping his bus to allow her to cross the road.
The Prince of Wales arrived in London aboard his latest 18 000 mile African hunting trip, facing 14 public engagements from May 13 to July 17 and dinners with four regiments. He will unveil a London statue to Marshal Ferdinand Foch in early June and may curtail future overseas journeys as heir to the throne.
City fire department responded around 10 this morning to a small blaze at the Charlie Doran home on Fast Main street. Firemen found the house full of smoke and the fire around a hot air register was quickly under control by Mrs Doran with very little damage reported.

Cleveland April 6 Airmail pilot Henry J Brown leaped 2000 feet to escape a burning wreck while saving a valuable cargo. The crash occurred near Clearfield Pennsylvania as Brown attempted an emergency landing in Hell's Stretch a hazardous section that claimed several pilots. He retrieved mail before the plane exploded and burned his hands in the attempt. The salvaged bag was to be flown back to Cleveland.
Grim eyed Methodists and United Presbyterian men roam streets to recruit for tomorrow’s Sunday school classes as the twelve week interchurch contest ends. U P leads 3189 to 3118 with Methodist handicap 3 to 2. 36 more Methodists needed to overturn the margin. Rev A W Henke says his side will exact the push required. Mac Delong claims an ace up the sleeve with an imported group of guests, though unsubstantiated. The contest has boosted attendance dramatically with some classes up over 600 percent. final results and the prize feast to be announced in Monday’s Journal.
John Bruce Young, a descendant of Thomas Young and longtime Washington county figure, died in Los Angeles last week. He served as county clerk and enlisted in the 8th Iowa Infantry in 1862 at seventeen. Survived by his wife Viola Eyestone and children Edgar Rankin Georg Lilly Mary Jean Willis, the family notes his strong character and community contributions.

Patrick H. Rush, 67, three time mayor of Danbury, died after illness and was buried here yesterday following his reelection to a fourth term. He had served multiple terms as city leader and lay in hospital at the time of his death.

Chester J. Brewer the University of Missouri athletic director rejoiced as his dog Lewellen Setter was found after a group of student pranksters had captured the wet and dirty animal and left it in the bed of Herbert Shue at his fraternity house. Shue returned the dog to Brewer.
Sheboygan Wisconsin April 26 Hurried efforts by special prosecutors to find substantial evidence against Governor Walter J Kohler on charges of excessive campaign expenditures were made as adjournment was ordered to allow review of the governor s correspondence. The state sought direct control of campaign funds but faced little headway after two and a half days of testimony. Prosecutors extended inquiry to Kohler s Kohler plumbing fixtures firm records for circumstantial proof of financial control.
Reports from Des Moines show Washington high school taking second place in both the 440 yard and the 80 yard relay events at the Drake Relays. Jefferson High of Jefferson, Iowa, won first in both races and set the meet record for 440 yards, later placing second in the 880 yard race among class A schools.
Iowa Continental Telephone Co begins three month program to modernize east Washington by underground cables. About 14,000 dollars to be spent on 2.5 miles of trench, main cable east from plant, new feeders, and 456 miles of meso cable plus 230 miles of feeder lines to subscribers.
