The Washington County Bicentennial Committee will meet Monday at the Washington County Extension office at 8 p.m. The venue is a change from earlier notices. Gladys Putman will present a brief program and groups will plan projects for the observance.

Public school music PSA headed by Gary McCurdy

Gary McCurdy the Washington junior high band director will write the script for a television public service announcement featuring Doc Severinsen. The spot to support public school music is for the Iowa Bandmasters Association and produced at WHO-TV Des Moines with distribution to Iowa stations planned for September.

Jerome Vittetoe Earns Iowa Farmer FFA Honor

Jerome Vittetoe son of Mr and Mrs Wilfred Vittetoe of rural Washington receives the Iowa Farmer degree the highest FFA honor in the state. Only 2 percent of Iowa FFA members earn it this year 259 members from 127 Vocational Agriculture depts across Iowa. Jerome is chapter president with 27 sows 80 acres cropland and cattle. He previously earned Greenhand Chapter Farmer Star Chapter Farmer and is the first Iowa Farmer from Washington since 1966.

Accord Reached on Saigon Evacuations by Monday

Washington reports that Communist contacts mediated by a third country allow Americans to be evacuated from Saigon with little trouble at least until Monday. Officials cite plans to resettle the majority of South Vietnamese evacuees at a high daily rate while up to 130000 refugees may enter the United States temporarily.

Car overturns on gravel road near Washington

A car driven by Jo Ann Dusenbery of Washington and owned by Linda L. Guffey of Lone Tree overturned on an airport road two miles south of Washington after losing control at 5:17 p.m. on Thursday. Officers said the car swerved across the road several times before rolling onto its top causing $900 in damage and the driver faces a failure to have control charge.

Keota Voters Rebuff 2% Mill School Levy

Keota voters rejected a 2 mill schoolhouse levy for the Keota Community School District during a 467 ballot vote 308 against 155 for 2 spoiled. The proposal would fund junior senior high industrial arts expansion and other building improvements over two years, raising about 80000 dollars. Superintendent Keith Saseen cited economic concerns and no immediate second election plans.

Iowa panel orders 10 minority or women hires for Highway Patrol

Suspended Sentence For Fairfield Man In Marijuana Case

A Fairfield youth, William A. Lessure, 18, was given a six month suspended jail sentence in Washington County District Court for possession of marijuana. He must show good behavior, undergo probation, reimburse court costs, and bear responsibility for local youth drug use. A concealed weapon charge was dismissed.
