Seth Miller, formerly of Kalona, died Tuesday evening in Milford Nebraska. His body is being returned to Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Gov. Leo A. Hoegh announced a 10 member statewide drought committee to address looming crisis conditions across Iowa. The panel will include farmers from eight districts and Iowa Agriculture Secretary Clyde Spry, with first meeting scheduled in Hoegh's office.
President Eisenhower told a news conference no purpose would be served by inviting Soviet leaders to visit the United States and that the H bomb test in the Pacific will proceed. He linked tests to guided missiles, ruled out tax cuts this year, and commented on Nixon’s possible presidential bid and Stassen’s talks with Khrushchev.
Washington officials hail a 100000 dollar industrial promotion fund drive as a success though more funds are still needed for working capital. The sale of shares will continue to complete the McCleery Cumming calendar plant purchase while Mr Kehoe plans to contact more prospects and announce further local industrial developments.

Daisy Blanche Holmes 75 died at her son Harold’s Keota home after a lingering illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 pm at Powell Funeral Home Keota with Rev. William Smith. burial in Crystal Plains Cemetery Smith Center Kansas later in the week. She was born 1880 in Iowa County to C B and Clara Lockridge Butler. She married Frank B Holmes in 1906 Webster. he died in 1944. Survived by son Harold, two stepchildren, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, four sisters and one brother.
Funeral services for Wisie Long are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday April 27 at Sherman's Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Washington Lodge No. 26 A F and A M members will assemble at 1:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple to attend, as will Eastern Star officers. Long was also a Bethlehem Commandery No. 45 Knights Templar member and long-time Junior Warden.
A joint Washington Keokuk and Iowa County board held a hearing at Sigourney on petitions to reorganize into the English Valley Community district. The plan would unite Webster Kinross North English and South English, with 27 districts overall. objections led to excluding Nira Fairview and Sherman Hawkeye Dayton districts. An adjourned meeting set for May 9 will decide remaining exclusions and election timing.
In New York doctors monitor the Medina quadruplets after two died from the birth to Carmen Medina. The two remaining girls Muriel and Elba Luz, both under three pounds, show good color and lungs though the outcome remains uncertain with feeding planned for Thursday or Friday.
Mrs. W. S. Britton aged 53 died this morning at a Muscatine hospital. The body will be brought to Kalona and funeral arrangements were not yet determined.
Washington Jaycees and Washington High School organize the Teen-Age Road-E-O with a written test and driving performance events after school Monday April 30. Local winner advances to a May 26 state contest in Perry Iowa with a national level in Washington D C in August.
Washington County Director of Social Welfare announced the Iowa Welfare Association spring institute will be held at Memorial Union in Iowa City on Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Payne Marshall and three Washington women will attend the two day program plus a county directors meeting this afternoon. Section meetings cover extension division School of Social Work Institute of Gerontology Sociology and Anthropology Department.
Adlai E Stevenson faltered in the Massachusetts primary, losing to favorite son Rep John W McCormack while Eisenhower led in both Pennsylvania and Alaska. Kefauver underperformed in Pennsylvania, easing Stevenson’s concerns as Alaska also showed Kefauver's weaker showing.
Dag Hammarskjold met Jordan Prime Minister Samir Rifai in Amman to seek a border agreement and ease renewed Israeli Jordan frontier tensions after Arab infiltrators were blamed for civilian deaths. Talks focused on border issues as Hammarskjold reviews cease fire proposals and reports indicate Jordan offered no proposals.
The Y & G Mobilgas service station at North Iowa Avenue and West Second Street will hold its grand opening on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28. Proprietors Nate Young and Glenn Garner, with manager Bob Ruppert, spearhead the event. Further details appear elsewhere in the Evening Journal.
Chairman Emanuel Celler charged southern Democrats used quorum calls as a filibuster to block House Judiciary action on civil rights. Rep. Colmer vowed to fight with all weapons as delays forced a break in committee work and compelled late roll calls. Senate panel led by Eastland began civil rights bill hearings with Humphrey praising his fairness. criticism mounted of Eastland’s leadership amid tensions over school integration rulings.
Eight children of Mr and Mrs Joseph Curtis died in a Corner Brook Newfoundland blaze. The parents and a younger child escaped unharmed. Firemen say the fire began around 9 p m EST and quickly consumed the Curtis home, likely starting from a light meter.
Ed Miller 81 of five miles south west of Washington died at 8 39 a m today in Washington County Hospital after three years of illness. Funeral 3 p m Friday April 27 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Walter Smith. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery. He was a farmer who lived on the same farm over 55 years. Born Oct 22 1874 in Washington County to Thomas Jefferson Miller and Eliza Clark. Married Jan 10 1900 in Washington to Bessie Mumper. Survived by wife three sons Roy Cotter Ray Davenport Harry V Miller Washington one brother Sam Miller Washington 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Secretary Ezra Benson told Congress that rejecting a sound soil bank plan could trigger further cuts in 1956 price supports. He warned major crops face supports ranging from 28.5 to 86 percent of parity if soil bank legislation does not address the surplus problem.
