Washington firemen answered a call to the Cloud Gardner residence at 1020 East Second Street this morning. The house filled with heavy smoke but no fire was found. investigators said a floor type oil furnace caused the smoke after a vent pipe became clogged.

Lynn Blanchard Wilmar Herd licka and Mary Ann Green were among 28 Iowa DE students returning from the 15th Annual Distributive Education National Leadership Conference in Chicago. The Washington High School DECA Chapter earned top ten status for a study on community attitudes toward current and future industry in Washington Iowa. A nine member family including six children died in an early morning fire at a waterfront home in North Beach Park Maryland. Victims tentatively identified as William Bowden 37 wife Marisa 35 mother Xenia Farr 60 and children Erica 13 Barbara 11 Cynthia 9 Martha Roger 5 and Christina 1. Police cite a possible spark from a fireplace or an oil burner explosion with some bodies showing smoke inhalation. Boy Injured Arm In Farm Accident Near Crawfordsville
Four year old Sidney Graber, son of Dennis and wife, suffered a mangled arm in a farm accident near the Graber home two miles south west of Crawfordsville. He was treated locally then transported to Mercy Hospital Iowa City where doctors report the arm is broken in three places and may be saved. His older brother Jerry, who was operating the tractor, shut off the motor after hearing the boy cry.
