Marine Maj. William McCormick Ret. avoided a parking ticket after a judge ruled the ticket invalid because a wet paint sign was placed beside his car by a city painting crew. A police tag had already been issued before he could move.
Des Moines Iowa lawmakers sent a flood of major bills to Governor Loveless late Tuesday and early today amid a House Senate showdown over an omnibus revenue package. The measures include water rights regulation, foreign psychiatrists licensing, a $31 million annual Regents funding package, county salary hikes for small counties, expanded fire powers and monthly school fire drills, and the creation of a State Mental Health Department. Other items raise driver license fees, require full disclosure of auto finance charges, and reform state mental health as the session nears possible adjournment.

DES MOINES ULP Alfred Sasser Jr 32 is named superintendent of the Glenwood State School effective May 15 at a salary of 9000 dollars per year. He replaces Dr VJ Meyer 80 who sought retirement. Sasser comes from Muscatatuck State School Indiana where he has worked four years and holds degrees from Rutgers Kansas State Northwestern and Indiana with a doctorate in special education. He is a consultant for the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults.
The Florida Senate rejected a bill to require all eggs sold in Florida to be candied graded and crated locally. Sponsor Sen. Harry Stratton said the plan targeted three chain stores selling low quality Iowa eggs at cut-rate prices. Governor Loveless denied threatening citrus growers and said he spoke with Governor Collins about the issue.
Gov. Herschel C. Loveless questioned the constitutional authority for a planned Iowa Legislature probe into state departments and political activity. In Gary Indiana officials diagnosed an outbreak of acute poisoning as the likely cause of two child deaths and multiple hospitalizations from mysterious stomach cramps. Dr Samuel J Brady of the Gary Health Board reported several siblings also affected and being treated in hospitals in Gary and Chicago.
Joan Eagle of Ainsworth is among 50 Iowa girls selected for three year nursing scholarships from the American Cancer Society Iowa division. She will study at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and receive $500 annually toward tuition and other costs.
Capt Iven Kincheloe leads a U S Air Force project to develop the X-15 rocket research plane built by North American Aviation Los Angeles. The joint project of NACA the Air Force and the Navy seeks speeds of 4000 mph and altitudes near 200000 feet to study reentry heating and high speed flight.

Fred J. Potratz 45 died at 11 08 Tuesday April 23 1957 at 705 South Sleight Street Naperville Illinois after serious illness since November 1956 and a January 1957 surgery. Funeral Thursday at 1 pm Barr Funeral Home Harvey Illinois. Born March 13 1912 in Washington County son of Herman and Amanda Potratz. Served in Marines 1941 1945 worked at Conrad Hilton Hotel Chicago chief room manager. Married 1946 to Aliie Frances Jones of Memphis Tenn. Survivors include wife daughter Janet Lee son Carl Robert two sisters Mrs Florence Wagner Wayland and Mrs Marjorie Whitacre Brighton and two brothers Edward and Robert Washington.
Mrs. Clara M. Yocom 86 died Tuesday at the home of her daughter in Iowa City. Funeral Friday at Swank Church northwest of Columbus Junction with burial in Swank Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Chester and George and Clarence, four daughters, 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.
Roy A. Foster of Boone pleaded guilty to two bullet holdups and a string of bad check passes across several counties. He admitted robbing the Ericson Grain Co elevator and an attack on a Huxley attendant, firing at victims, and using stolen funds to buy cars and gifts for his bride.
Dwain L. White announces a new implement business at 1055 West Madison Street. He will be exclusive agent in the Washington area for Minneapolis Moline farm equipment and offer automotive electrical and carburetor repair services. He is moving in stock from Kalona Motor and Implement and plans to open Friday after years of farming in Washington County.
In St. Raphael's Cathedral Dubuque two Roman Catholic priests were elevated to bishops in a rare dual consecration led by Cardinal Cicognani. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. George J Bishop became auxiliary to the Dubuque archbishop, and the Rt. Rev. Msgr. James V. Casey became auxiliary to the Lincoln bishopric.

Juniors buy two tickets one for themselves and one for a senior while seniors buy tickets only for their parents attending.
Rev. Dr. Arthur J. Brown former foreign missions leader and author marked his 100th birthday in West Brookfield Massachusetts as the oldest name appearing in Who's Who in America.

Iowans expected three days of fair mild weather as a storm system moved northeast into Canada. Strong southerly winds and warm humid air persisted in Iowa with temperatures in the 70s, ranging 70 to 78 degrees in cities like Council Bluffs Burlington and Davenport.
Rev. Wayne Leslie Lodwig of Western Grove Arkansas died suddenly at his Keota Keola home Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held at 10 30 a m Friday April 26 at Powell Funeral Home Keota. He was born in Kansas and moved to Iowa as an infant. He lived in Daytonville and Keota and married Wilma Canfield in 1903. she died in 1948. Survivors include nine children and a sister. He served as a Christian Church minister in several states.
John Alston 45 a Wayland native died suddenly in Davenport after a heart attack at his home. Funeral services are pending. He was a barber by trade and survived by his wife Ruth Ricestrosser married in 1999 and two daughters Mary Kay and Jane Ann. He also left two sisters and a brother.

Highs reach the 70s Thursday, mild conditions continue Friday, temperatures about 3 degrees above normal through Monday, with a cooler trend by Saturday and light to moderate precipitation 0.3 to 2 inches as showers occur early in the period and again around Monday.
