Daniel Duran, 24, a Mexican national, crossed the border at Tijuana 15 days earlier and traveled at night to evade capture. He climbed a barbed wire fence onto a Los Angeles County sheriff's honor farm seeking work and was arrested after getting the job.
Washington District Boy Scout leaders discuss the county Camporee at Lake Darling Youth Center June 5 to 7 and Hawkeye Area Council exposition at Cedar Rapids May 22 to 23. National Scout Jamboree July 17 to 23 at Irvine Ranch Santa Ana Calif. Three Washington boys plan to attend. New district committee members welcomed.
UN forces repelled 14 Communist attacks as ground fighting surged from Panmunjom to Punchbowl. Capt Joseph McConnell Jr of Apple Valley California downed a Communist MIG-15 in a dogfight while rescuing an F-86, becoming the fifth American to reach ten aerial kills. B-29 Superforts and B-26 bombers attacked Hungnam targets on the northeast coast.
General MacArthur released a 1500 word letter to Senator Byrd outlining a plan to end the Korean War by threatening to bomb Communist China. He argued such action could force the Soviet Union to broker peace without more bloodshed and weaken Red China’s ability to sustain war. He said the threat would not trigger World War III and that Russia would act based on its own power balance.
Edward Lund 41 died in Mercy hospital Clinton Thursday evening. He was the husband of former Gloria Keyser of Washington. Funeral services will be held Monday at Zion Lutheran church Clinton. Body at Snell funeral home Clinton with calls starting Saturday evening. Born April 14 1912 in Clinton. Married October 21 1950 to Gloria Keyser in Washington. Survivors include his wife and daughter Margaret Mary.
The Cudahy packing Co. sues CIO United Packing House Workers for damages over 1.25 million dollars for 21 stoppages and a four day strike. The company seeks 60 thousand dollars daily for three days of full laborer absence plus extra daily penalties as protests continue. The union says 2,300 members are locked out over job classification protests.
Washington reports House investigators accused Henry W. Grunewald of lying about his involvement in a $7,000 tax case. Tobin pressed Grunewald on his statements about speaking with Oliphant and Klein case inquiries, prompting Grunewald to retract prior testimony as erroneous.
Members of the music department at the State University of Iowa presented the final Community Forum program of the year Thursday evening at the high school auditorium before a smart but appreciative audience. Those who heard the University musicians in their program last night found their presentation one of the best of the entire series. The Forum programs in Washington this year were sponsored by the Rotary club, the U’s Mens club and the YMCA.
Joseph R. Hall of Falmouth has attended every Marine Lodge of Masons meeting for 24 years. When he was hospitalized the lodge cancelled a meeting to preserve his uninterrupted attendance record.
New London, Connecticut private school teacher William F Carney faced a police court on charges of intoxication and breach of peace. He told the court his pupils were driving him to drink, and his case was continued for three months to allow him to get straightened out.
Weather bulletin for Des Moines Iowa reports cloudy skies with strong shifting winds and occasional showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. Thunderstorms expected locally heavy in east and central areas then turning cooler tonight. Saturday partly cloudy with cooler readings east and central. Lows 35 to 40 northwest and 40 to 45 southeast. Highs Saturday in the mid 50s.
A twin engine Navy DC-3 on a regular El Centro to Alameda flight with a stop at San Diego crashed into the ocean near Point Loma with five aboard including three crewmen and two passengers. A life jacket was found about 1.5 miles south of Point Loma as Coast Guard and Navy crews searched the area following a lighthouse watch report of a low flying plane and crash.
In St Louis police stopped a bank robbery at the Southwest Bank. A bandit killed himself after police surrounded the building and tear gas was used. A second bandit, William Shoal, was wounded as he fled using a woman as a shield, Eva Hamilton was injured. Corporal Robert Heitz was shot and hospitalized. A third bandit escaped in a green Illinois plated car. money bagged satchel reportedly loaded.

Washington reports the government collected a record 68.5 billion dollars in taxes for 1952. The rise, up about 12.5 billion from 1951, comes from higher corporate and personal income taxes, aided by higher rates, stronger business and increased incomes.
Washington Jaycees hope for a weather break this Saturday to resume selling Scotchlite bumper tape to motorists. The safety tape, sold nationally as a Junior Chamber project, debuted a week ago but weather and other factors slowed progress. Tapes cost one dollar each and installation is free. The tape has approval from local and national safety authorities.
United Press reports tornado warnings for parts of Kansas Missouri Nebraska and Iowa after Oklahoma and Texas twisters. Two twisters were sighted in Kansas with warnings for Wichita Larned Lincoln Tarkio area.
A petition filed in district court by George F. Clark seeks 600 dollars from Howard Ballou. Clark claims the amount is owed from a pig marketing arrangement involving sows owned by Clark but used by Ballou.

U S warships engaged Communist shore batteries in Wonsan Harbor Korea evacuating wounded from an Allied island at the harbor entrance. Four ships and carrier planes fought heavy shelling to silence enemy artillery with no detail on casualties or hits.
John L. Lewis told a Senate Labor Committee hearing that Congress should wipe out all labor relations laws. He argued repeal would not recreate a jungle law, as public opinion is more enlightened. Taft defended the act while presiding, but the two traded sharp but good humor.
Two 19 year olds, David R. Beckham of Maquoketa and Stuart H. Edwards of Monmouth, were fined $100 and costs each after pleading guilty to OMVI following an 80 mile per hour chase. Beckham also pleaded guilty to driving without a license with a $10 fine and costs. Patrolman Travis Grimm reported the high speed pursuit that ended when a shot was fired at the fleeing vehicle.
A 24 year old girl Wilmoth Whisman, three feet tall and 40 pounds, died from starvation and neglect in Zion Illinois. Coroner says a May 4 inquest will be held and a mental examination ordered for the mother Anna Whisman who fears doctors after prior family losses. The girl lived with her widow mother in a room lacking water or toilet facilities.
Freed American POWs report at least 743 more U S soldiers killed by the Reds and describe a Death Valley where bodies were carted from front to camp. They tally deaths from torture and neglect, with other accounts of large losses among former prisoners. The UN aims to continue exchanges as long as hostilities endure.
President Eisenhower told 1,200 Republican women that no miraculous overnight gains for world peace are expected. He reviewed inflation, corruption and foreign policy as the three 1952 campaign issues and urged a strong yet conciliatory U.S. stance. He praised Republican women and noted the party's pledge progress toward 1954 election goals. Leonard W. Hall urged turning votes from 1952 abstainers to GOP support.
