President Eisenhower told a New York audience that the United States must lead in creating genuine international understanding to secure lasting peace. He urged the press to present balanced facts and broader coverage beyond politics to highlight everyday life and the man on the street.
French Prime Minister Georges Bidault told the North Atlantic Council that Russia’s proposal for an all European security system and NATO membership is unrealistic. He urged patience in seeking a security arrangement, stressing the need for clear realities. NATO met to reassess Soviet intentions as Ismay warned of a difficult peace phase with Dulles and Eden attending.
Henry Helm, 84, suffocated by smoke when a fire trapped him on the second floor above Doyle hardware store in Logan Iowa. A passing trucker heard his cries as he called from a window. he was found dead near the door. The second floor suffered heavy damage. survivors include his son Verne, a Logan druggist, and a grandson.
Funeral services for Rachel Carl Chapman 90 who died April 22 at Restorium Des Moines will be held Sunday at 2 p m at Powell funeral home Wellman. Dr E M Buehler will conduct with burial in Taylor cemetery. Survived by three children one daughter Francis Horner of Cedar Rapids two sons Frank Fritz Des Moines and Charles Fritz Wellman seven grandchildren two great grandchildren an elder brother William Curl McAllen Tex.
Washington reports the Daughters of the American Revolution closed their annual congress with seven new vice presidents general and two life time honorary vice presidents. President Eisenhower briefed the group calling DAR a typically American society. Senator Edward Martin praised the DAR as fighting for 100 percent Americanism while Homer Ferguson and Richard Bolling debated executive power during an evening program.
Rep. Thomas Martin says Congress should allow feeding corn under farm storage loans to livestock with the loan secured by livestock. He argues this would reduce corn storage and move grain to production. He also proposed government loan guarantees for farm equipment and limits on crops from diverted acreage to protect Iowa farmers.

Washington druggist Herb Osincup who fell ill at his store on Thursday was reported much improved today. He remains hospitalized in Washington county, with initial fears pointing to a heart attack, later ruled out by tests. Doctors attribute his illness to exhaustion.
North Des Moines posted the fastest prep sprint medley relay in Iowa history with a 3 23 77 in Drake Relays trials as Caesar Smith led a 1 56 2 half mile. Jim Dabner set a Drake record in the football throw with 227 feet 6 inches, surpassing the old mark by 7 feet 114 inches. Geneva Muster of Ottumwa was runner up.
Paton Iowa May many voters approved a 60000 bond issue for the Paton Consolidated School District to finance an addition for agriculture classes and music facilities. The vote was 277 for and 78 against.
DES MOINES UP The State Tax Commission reported this year’s income tax receipts through April 22 totaled 17 367 327 up from 15 015 156 for a similar period last year. Commission chairman Ray Johnson noted 2 500 more returns this year than in 1953, with 433 753 returns so far in 1954. Corporation taxes showed a slight decline.
