Street department superintendent Frank Lukavsky told the Washington city council of ongoing work and a clean up campaign that is a day behind schedule but should finish Tuesday if weather allows. Eugene Bixbe was approved as assistant street department superintendent.
A Sunday fire on Hilltop Drive damaged belongings and caused extensive smoke in the home of Mrs. Rodney Swailes. Columbus Community firemen arrived about 3:30 p.m. and forced a hole in the wall to reach the suspected electrical fire. Officials say a defective television set borrowed during repairs caused the blaze. No injuries reported.
Ottumwa fire officials investigated a weekend fire in a residential area that destroyed three buildings and forced three elderly residents from their homes. The blaze started behind an abandoned grocery store used as an auction warehouse and spread to two adjacent houses. Florence Freed, 72, was hospitalized with back injuries. Evelyn Steele and Orville Green escaped uninjured.
A gas fueled blast and ensuing fire ripped through a 22 story office building at 305 E. 45th Street and damaged adjacent Envoy Towers near Second Avenue. About 40 people were injured, mostly minor, with evacuations and hospital treatment underway.

The Iowa Commerce Commission set a May 13 hearing on possible rate reductions for Iowa Southern Utilities Co of Centerville. The staff report says the firm is too profitable as a regulated monopoly and should return about 2.4 million dollars to 87,000 customers, a move that would mark a historic first rate cut if ordered.
Washington High School FBLA captures permanent possession of the Lloyd V. Douglas trophy as Iowa’s outstanding FBLA club for the sixth straight year. T.J. Berdo mentors the group as 613 students from 22 contests compete statewide. Kathy Schantz and Jean Marie win state firsts and head to the San Francisco national convention. Terry Goeke becomes state FBLA treasurer.
Washington County sheriff's officers investigated a weekend series of break ins in the Richmond and Kalona area. At Joe's Appliance Barn on Highway 1 south of Kalona a 5:45 a.m. burglary yielded two shotguns watches and clocks and a Polaroid camera with a total value of 511 dollars. Richmond victim Joe Benjamin reported a damaged door and missing tape batteries and insulation. Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond reported missing candles and candlesticks valued at 360 dollars. Police also investigated vandalism at the Schultze Ford lot east of Washington where a stock rack belonging to Moline Body Co. was badly damaged Friday night.
Washington County 4-H clubs report weekly rainfall totals and field work days through the 4H Crop and Weather Reporter program. April 11 to 17 notes varied rainfall from .56 to 1.40 inches, some wind damage, and topsoil moisture levels described as short to adequate.
Iowa U.S. Senate candidate State Senator George Milligan told a GOP workshop in Clear Lake he will not reveal his personal finances, arguing privacy rights. He contrasted his stance with rival Rep. David Stanley who supports full disclosure to show lack of conflicts of interest.
In Des Moines UPI reports the Iowa Senate nears completion of a consumer credit bill aimed to replace the stalled UCCC. A subcommittee led by Sen. Ralph McCartney works on an eighteen percent ceiling on the first five hundred dollars and a fifteen percent rate on the balance. The bill seeks consumer protections while scrapping broad administrative changes from the old act.
Two Keota youths Pat Vogel and Billy Flynn were welding a barrel on the Leon Vogel farm when the barrel end blew out causing a fire. One youth sustained second degree burns and was treated by a Wellman physician and released. The fire was extinguished with no extensive damage.
