The official observer reports 3.46 inches of rain since Sunday in Washington with 0.75 inches added in the last 24 hours. Spring field work is delayed while hopes rise for drier, warmer weather and basement moisture is noted by city residents.
John Young and Charles Duke planned a 2.6 mile rover ride to Stone Mountain on Descartes to sample highland volcanic rocks. They hoped for a duplicate of Genesis rock and aimed for a third moonwalk Sunday despite earlier guidance-system trouble.
The White House announced President Nixon will visit Leningrad and Kiev along with Moscow on the Soviet trip starting May 22. Nixon and his wife stay until May 30 before flying to Tehran for two days. Press secretary Ronald L. Ziegler declined to address reports the trip was downgraded, saying planning continues.
Riverside Planning Commission reviewed a subdivision regulation ordinance on April 18. The four areas cover plat procedures, design standards, improvement requirements, and administration. Communist guerrillas overran a regimental base camp 40 miles northwest of Saigon forcing South Vietnamese infantry and U S advisers to pull back and form a protective circle around Dau Tieng. Fifty guerrillas were killed around Dau Tieng with no reported government casualties.
John Fairfax and Sylvia Cook, English couple sailing Britannia II, arrived at Hayman Island in their 35 foot boat after surviving a cyclone and two tempests. Police reported blistered hands and a shark bite on Fairfax arm, with both in good condition.
Variable cloudiness tonight with a chance of showers and possibly some snow flurries in the north. Lows tonight in the mid 30s, around 40 in the south. Sunday brings partly cloudy skies with highs mostly in the 50s.
A man in Army fatigues fired an M1 carbine through Harrisonville Missouri shops killing two police officers and wounding several others before killing himself. Charles Simpson of Holden was identified as the shooter. the FBI assisted as curfew was set for two nights.
Two scholarship loan funds, the J.B. Dill and Mary K. Acheson, extend aid to Washington college students. Eligible recipients may borrow up to 2000 dollars or 500 dollars respectively, repayable over five years without interest beginning one year after graduation. Trusts include the United Presbyterian pastor, the Washington school superintendent, and the YMCA president. Applications available from these trustees.
Protests across cities and state capitals escalate as marchers burn, break windows, and block military sites. Over 360 arrests reported, including at Army Reserve and ROTC locations. University campuses from Illinois to Harvard report sit ins and confrontations with police and National Guardsmen.
Mr and Mrs Robert Marek host a Sunday evening dinner at their home on route three north of Washington from 6 to 9 pm. Democratic primary candidates Trace Anderson Maxine Elliott and John McDaniel will attend along with state and congressional race hopefuls. Delegates from the state statutory convention in Ames will be present and residents are invited to meet the candidates.
