Kalona buggy driver killed in Iowa crash
John Miller 66 a Kalona Amish resident died after his horse and buggy was struck on Iowa 1 by a car driven by Lloyd Epley Coralville. Miller's niece Ida Yoder 30 a passenger was uninjured. funeral plans set for Kalona with Peterseim Funeral Home in charge. Surviving include three daughters three sons 20 grandchildren a sister and a brother. Burial at East Union Cemetery.

Artificial heart aid keeps Illinois miner alive in Houston
A 65 year old Illinois coal miner, Marcel L De Rudder, clung to life after artificial left ventricular bypass implanted by Dr Michael DeBakey and team. The device pumped 60 percent of his heart's work, beating eight times a minute, as surgeons hoped it would let the damaged heart recover. The operation began Thursday and by 9:30 p m CST he remained stable with no heart failure. DeBakey’s team, backed by a $4.5 million grant, had pursued this breakthrough for 16 years.

Stampede of Cattle Runs Through Hialeah Streets
About 200 head broke from a slaughterhouse corral and stampeded through Hialeah Florida triggering a major traffic jam. Police used patrol cars helicopters and trucks to corral the animals.
