Des Moines April 22 193? Members of the 45th general assembly return home after a session noted as one of the busiest on record. The adjournment came at 5 15 pm with three measures failing to pass including an interim tax study committee a hospital lien for emergency fees and a plan to cut pupil transportation costs.
The World Wide Guild of Wellman Baptist church presents The Two Masters, a missionary play with eight young women led by director Alvin Smith. Rev M L Dewey accompanies and acts in the service. A supper in the church dining room precedes the evening event at the Washington Baptist church.
Washington quota established at 35 men for reforestation relief across counties. Frank R. Sage, county relief chair, to lead early recruitment. many applicants already. Iowa’s state quota is 5,000, allocated by population. A Des Moines meeting will issue guidance and forms. first selections come from relief rolls.
The Iowa City to Washington star route delivers more morning mail, with most mail reaching Washington patrons by eight or nine o'clock. Temporary carrier Vernon Oxley serves thirty days while bids are sought for a permanent one ton truck run.
The narrator claims stories from Alouquenque New Mexico papers about being off the gold while recalling travel across Arizona New Mexico and overseas. Des Moines reports Washington county has been approved for a second small emergency relief loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. The county board sought 9000 to fund unemployment relief with work programs through May and June. About 200 men already benefited from a prior 2000 loan through road and ditch work, with work days varying by week.
The Washington county ministerial associations will gather at the Y M C A next Monday at 10 o clock. Rev C L Allison of West Chester and Rev 8 F Wenger of Crawfordsville lead the devotional service with The Word and the Light and Amos KH Wells and the Bible. Rev F Witzigman of Washington will discuss the pastor and the commencement activities relating to ministers and public schools.
At the April Washington club meeting, directors approved sponsoring two track meets at the Washington athletic field. The county meet April 28 and the Ke-Wash conference meet May 1 will be funded by ticket sales with free admission to the latter. Neighboring towns in the Ke Wash League include Kalona Wellman Brighton West Chester Keota and Richland. County high schools will be invited to send teams.
Washington county Masons announce a gathering at the Masonic temple on a Friday evening in April. Grand Master Fred Hansen of Clinton is expected to speak, with eight lodges invited and more to be added. Local officers organize the event and promise a large turnout.
A coming talk will examine Menno Simons as a major church founder, outlining his role in shaping Anabaptist beliefs and his influence on Mennonite history. The event promises a scholarly overview and discussions of Simons’s lasting impact.
The Washington high school class basketball tournament concluded with the juniors crowned champions after sweeping three games. The seniors went 2–1, freshmen 1–2, and sophomores 0–3, while the junior college team won all its games but was not in the championship race. The freshmen defeated the sophomores 82 to 17 and the juniors beat the seniors 29 to 26, sealing the title.
Washington reports that Farmers Savings Bank of Kalona has been released from Senate File 111, the Iowa bank stabilization law, and is licensed to do general banking. The bank is again led by its own officers with F E Skola directing affairs, a longtime figure in Washington.
Harold Schneider, Harry Montgomery and Cloyd Garrett traveled to Sigourney on a Thursday evening for a business trip.
Stan Kiesey of the Y M C A in charge of the grade school diamond ball tournament reports after four games each school has one win and one loss. Lincoln defeated Wallace 25 4 and One Heights beat Centennial 27 17 yesterday.
A new schedule for boys physical work at the Y M C A is planned next week. The gym will be closed to all boys except high school age. Younger boys will use the swimming pool with classes for winners non swimmers junior life savers and adult life savers.
Heavy spring snowfall blocked rescue efforts across Colorado and Wyoming. In Casper, 26 inches buried the Jevel and Estes Park reported 67 inches of snow, trapping marooned travelers and delaying relief.
A compromise on free silver in Roosevelt's inflation bill reached to forestall a Democratic split in the Senate. The plan would let the president fix the silver coinage ratio. Western senators protested omitting the silver section while Mellon and Mills push for sound money.
Clyde V. Brown, president of the county council of religious education, announced the sixty eighth annual state Sunday school convention to be held in Independence April 26 27 and 28 with headquarters at the First Presbyterian church. The theme is Increase and speakers include Dr Samuel Garvin of the University of Dubuque Dr D W Kurtz of Bethany Biblical Seminary Chicago Dr Hugh H Magill of Chicago Dr Ida B Wise Smith on What Will Iona Do about the Liquor Situation and Miss Katherine Boeye of Nanking China teaching at the Methodist girls school.
A group attended a formal concert of classical music at the Scott furniture store. Harry D. Fidler of the Columbia Phonograph Company described highlights before records, with works including Schubert Unfinished, Mozart Jupiter, Tschaikowsky Sixth Symphony, Brahms Symphony No.1 movements, Chopin Nocturnes, operatic numbers, Tschaikowsky string trio, and Bash suites Nos. 2 and 3 for flute and strings. A similar session followed in the afternoon. Mr. Fidler was assisted by his wife.
Lt Patrolman W L Norton serves as a police officer and bishop of the Liberal Christian Church. An hour after aiding in pushing unemployed workers from the county city building he officiated at a four couple wedding ceremony.
Madison police pursued U. S. Alexander Jordan after he escaped a contagious hospital by climbing a five inch ledge on the second story. He retired again before officers could locate him.
