Scouts Plan Saturday Exposition At YMCA

The YMCA hosts a scouting exposition Saturday from 7 30 to 9 30 p m with 300 local scouts exhibiting camping cooking and vocational projects. Demonstrations include a water safety show directed by Milo Steele Jr and a water show. Prizes awarded for top ticket sellers include a bicycle radio and sleeping bag.

Removal of Cars From Square Tonight

City asks all cars to leave the business district in Washington by midnight tonight. Street department crews under Street Commissioner Orville Long will wash the square and adjacent blocks to meet parking rules, which require removal only during cleaning, now planned every Friday night for the rest of the summer.

Mrs. Maud Cutright 83 of 1011 East 3rd St was found dead in her home Thursday evening She apparently died Tuesday April 18 Funeral services will be at 10 a m Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Carlyle Smith in charge Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery She was born Maud Nicola February 12 1878 in Riverside She married Charles C Cutright who preceded her in death She was a Christian Church member and served as chief operator of the telephone company for nearly 21 years Survivors include a nephew and cousins.

Washington Votes to Adopt Daylight Saving Time Change

A straw vote in Washington shows 674 in favor and 596 against daylight saving time this summer for June through August. The city council approved a resolution directing all city agencies and the surrounding trade area to operate on the new time from 2 00 a.m May 28 to 2 00 a.m August 27. The Jaycees organized the election and the council praised their work while noting the move aligns with neighboring communities.

Kennedy hears experts on health problems facing nation

Twenty two national specialists on cancer and heart disease urged President Kennedy to accelerate federal funding and expand research. They proposed a centralized electronic medical file to reduce duplications and improve treatment while stressing the environment and tobacco as cancer hazards.

Iowa Senate OKs nearly 30 million for school aid

A Senate subcommittee approved an annual state aid package of 29,931,530 for Iowa schools, matching Gov. Erbe's recommendation and about 6 million more than current funding. The panel backed Nolan's rule limiting increases in per pupil costs, with several senators supporting and opposing the measure, and approved a temporary ban on depriving districts of general aid due to substandard ratings.

Mrs Nela Drake 63 longtime Columbus Junction resident died Thursday at Muscatine General Hospital. She was born January 29 1898 in Concord Township daughter of F E and Bertha Tucker McKean. Jaycees Help Ottumwa Telethon For Cerebral Palsy Fund

Washington Jaycees join Ottumwa Jaycees in a 18 hour telethon to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Fund. Castro Radio Claims U S Destroyers Aided Invasion

Havana radio charged that two U S destroyers covered exile forces that invaded Cuba this week and that Cuban defenders under Fidel Castro shot down several planes including a B29 and an F86. It named exile leaders and boasted of Soviet support while warning of World War III.
