A 14 year bereaved farmer Rich ard Hammes returns to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Iowa to bury his wife Ruth beside eight of their children killed in a 1956 train accident. The couple had eight children and later lost a newborn during Ruth's Easter birth.
Funeral services for Ina Duncan Huebner 75 of Des Moines were held April 11 in Des Moines. A cousin of Tom Duncan of Washington she was born in Columbus Junction and spent her early life in Mt. Pleasant. She married Fred C. Huebner in 1911 who died in 1950. Survivors include son Duncan Huebner of Des Moines daughter Mrs George Stein of Kansas City brother Floyd Duncan of Iowa City and four sisters Mrs Geneva Carpenter Glendale Calif Mrs Joseph Doe Berkeley Calif Mrs Albert Wegner Carroll and Ruth Anna Duncan Adel.
Edith Dlamini of Durban, Union of South Africa, visiting Washington during National YWCA week, will be heard on two radio programs. Emerging Africa airs April 25 at 8 p.m. on WHO Des Moines and other NBC stations. At Home with Alma John will be heard on 33 stations. Dlamini is in the United States for study and training at the Manhattan YWCA and School of Social Work.
A time change affects Continental Trailways buses through Washington. The westbound bus now leaves at 3 p.m. instead of 5:40 a.m., arriving Des Moines at 6:15 p.m. and Omaha at 9:50 p.m. Effective Sunday April 24, eastbound service unchanged. The alteration aims to improve connections at company terminals.
Dean Noble twenty seven from Wapello was knocked from a barn roof by a falling branch at Merele Ball farm between Wapello and Columbus Junction. He suffered a broken leg and dislocated shoulder and was taken to Muscatine General Hospital. his condition was not described as serious. John Davis assisted and Noble was trimming trees when the accident happened.
Dale Smith of Salem was buried under more than four feet of dirt when a ditch at the Wayland Retirement Home construction caved in. Workers freed him promptly, Duke Schlatter used a portable resuscitator, and Smith received oxygen for ten minutes before being taken to Mt. Pleasant Hospital for observation and later released.
James Frederick Shaffer 79 died 9:45 p m Wednesday April 20 1960 at his son Lawrence Shaffer’s home in Wayland after months of ill health. Funeral 2 p m Friday Zehr Funeral Home Wayland with Rev J J Pritchard officiating. Burial Crawfordsville cemetery. Survivors include son Lawrence Wayland granddaughter Mrs James Wyse Mt Pleasant rural, great grandchild, and brothers Robert and Lee Crawfordsville.
Two lawsuits totaling over 151000 were filed in the court clerk’s office after the April 1959 fatal two car crash on highway 218 north of Ainsworth. Carl W. Setterberg as administrator seeks 100932 for Richard Setterberg and 50800 for Mrs. Setterberg’s death against Margaret Faye Kirn of Missouri.
Mrs Mary DeWolf Heilman 73 of Brighton dies April 19 1960 at Hadley Nursing Home Richland. Funeral at 2 p m Friday at Brighton Methodist Church with Rev Roger Williams. Burial Hillcrest Cemetery Gould Funeral Home Brighton in charge. Survived by husband Clarence Heilman two sons Orie DeWolf Rock Island Harold DeWolf Brighton three sisters Opal Lemley Wellston Cecil Hesseltine Brighton Helen McKay Russell.
Jane Bendixen, 19, Davenport Iowa, crawled 8 to 10 miles through treacherous terrain to guide rangers up Longs Peak Colo as three rescue parties sought two exhausted University of Colorado students. Prince Willman 23 Fort Smith Ark and David Jones 18 Webster Groves Mo were in poor condition after a spring storm trapped them on the peak. A Civil Air Patrol plane diverted due to strong turbulence while teams followed the rookie climber’s directions from a hospital bed.
The 85 year old President Syngman Rhee received the cabinet resignation as protests flare after a week of deadly violence. Opposition presses for new presidential elections while U.S. efforts push for a liberal coalition and easing autocratic rule. Finance Minister Song In Sang confirmed the resignations were delivered to Rhee.
Samuel A. Doran 90 of 439 East Madison Street died today at Pines Nursing Home after months of illness. Funeral services Saturday at 1 30 p m in Jones Funeral Home with Rev W Robert Culbertson officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery. He was born October 9 1869 in Washington County. Surviving are four children Edith Kelley Coralville Charles Doran Schomish Ewing Olive Schantz Washington 23 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was the last of nine children and had worked as a carpenter. He was preceded in death by two sons.
The House approved a six part civil rights package adding federal referees to judge Negro voting qualifications in areas under court orders. It preserves voting records for 22 months and imposes penalties for obstructing federal orders, including desegregation rulings. Eisenhower was expected to sign into law.
The Iowa Association of Regular Baptist Churches, at its 25th annual Fellowship in Des Moines, adopted a resolution opposing the election of any Roman Catholic as U.S. president. It also condemned premarital sex, urging adherence to biblical morality and criticizing secular justifications. The article notes University of Illinois professor Leo Koch faced dismissal over sex views.
A five county National Farmers Organization will meet Friday night April 22 at 7 30 in the Wapello high school. Speaking to the American Society of Newspaper Editors, he outlined a plan linking growth, defense, and social progress to fuller justice and global engagement. He defended delaying primaries to avoid fragmented voter attention and emphasized coordinated national policy.
