Newton W C Mueller 87 of Des Moines was arrested near Kellogg in a case involving the theft of 62 dozen eggs from Kellogg farm wife Mrs Henry McGinn. The arrest followed a supposed Newton grocer salesman who falsely claimed corporate ties and promised payment.
City Solicitor Byron Verpoeg filed a special appearance to question the Civil Service Commission's jurisdiction in the Wortmann appeal. Wortmann, a suspended officer, challenged the suspension affirmed by Police Chief Howard Allgood rather than by Mayor George Burdock.
Marshalltown teachers were awarded their second raise in as many years as contracts were mailed. Superintendent William F Shirley announced the total increase of 6500 dollars, with Director of Athletics Russell E F Dickinson receiving the largest boost of 150 dollars.
Davenport voters approved a 15 year franchise for the Davenport Water Co by 1080 to 434. The company offered a 12 percent rate cut to consumers and a $6 annual savings per fire hydrant. Last November the city rejected buying the water plant in a close election.
Mrs Henry andermartin of Beacon and eight children owed their lives to a small black and white dog named Billy. The animal's bark roused the family as their home burned, allowing all occupants to escape unharmed. Only Billy and a basket of freshly laundered clothes plus a bag of groceries were saved.
Police in DUBLEQUE are looking for the owner of a Wisconsin licensed automobile left parked on a street for two months. Wisconsin authorities have been contacted to determine to whom the vehicle is owed.
In Van Buren county Bonaparte township the Union Protection Company socialized in theft with five members who formed the society. After eight or nine years they dissolved as it outgrew its usefulness. Only five horses were stolen from members and all but one were recovered.
Grinnell announces Joseph Auslander, noted poet and Columbia lecturer, has been chosen as a judge for the annual Whitcomb poetry contest this spring. Henry Alden, chairman of the committee, credited Auslander with authorship of poetry books and editor roles in several anthologies.
John Chalgren arrives as new assistant manager at the McLellan store in Washington coming from Albia where he served as assistant manager of the Dictellan store. He lists Fort Dodge as his home and rooms at 802 South Iowa Avenue with Mrs. W. A. Gibbons.
Five dynamite bombs exploded from Lake Shore Glencoe to Wilmette and Chicago's south side. No injuries reported though dozens faced danger. damage totaled about $25,000. Authorities suspect a bombing ring and blame labor unrest for the attacks.
The official weather report records yesterday afternoon and evening rainfall at 0.42 inches. Morning skies were gray and cloudy but intermittent sun broke through, lifting temperatures.
At a special meeting Mayor Lloyd Lytle presided as the council voted to move 3000 from the water fund to the general fund to aid rebuilding Kim Grove cemetery road from South Iowa Avenue to the cemetery east gate. If a 45 percent federal grant is obtained the city and county will split the remaining 55 percent, not exceeding 3000 each. The council also hired the Municipal band for 1400 for the year and discussed a milk ordinance with Health Unit officials.
Scattered rainfall touched Keokuk with as much as 2.31 inches while Council Bluffs recorded only a trace. The showers were followed by cooler temperatures and clearing skies with more showers forecast for late tomorrow.
Robert Clemens Holmes, nearly 89, died at 7:00 a m in Crawfordsville at his son Thomas’s home after a long illness. Born June 8 1848 in Washington County Pennsylvania he moved to Iowa as a child and later settled in Crawfordsville. He married Amanda McClure on February 25 1869 and they had nine children. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p m at the United Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville.
Iowa senate passes bill 10 to 1 to appoint a business manager at Mt Pleasant State hospital to relieve the superintendent and oversee seven institutions. Special appropriations total 502000 for 1937 1939 to fund the Mt Pleasant hospital and related projects including a 430000 building and 12000 for rewiring after last year’s fire. If approved the four story building could include clinics and living space for staff with future expansion planned.
Mrs. John D. M. Hamilton, wife of the Republican National Committee chairman, filed a petition for separate maintenance in a Topeka court on April 21. The move follows their separation and seeks court support for support and alimony.
Shock waves shook Madrid as heavy shells struck from hills east of the city at dawn, with more than 30 explosions near Calle De Alcala by noon. Citizens fled to shelter while streets filled with wreckage, wrecked autos, and bodies, as bombing trucks and ambulances moved through the city.
A big audience attended Tuesday night to hear Evangelist Cowboy Kellogg on BE in light of Bible. The sermon was engaging and instructive, rewarding long-distance attendees. He will preach on The United States in Prophecy and hopes to have a new book supply today for public purchase.
A large crowd attended last night’s Rendezvous benefit dance for the high school band uniforms. Tickets sold in advance with some purchased by those absent, though exact proceeds were not yet tallied. The event featured a ten piece orchestra from the high school and junior college, with Roy Means and the DeMolay boys donating the venue. Sponsors included Clarence Klepfer Byron Snider W B Dupuis Vic Crone and Maurice Brayton the band director.
Fire crews responded to a smoke report yesterday afternoon near 5 o clock at the Sherman drug store but no blaze was found. Papers burning in a furnace caused the smoke and prompted neighbors to call in the alarm.
Clyde Casperson age 21 of Grand Mound pleaded guilty to manslaughter for a fatal March 21 accident that killed George Olsen and related parole proceedings in Clinton.
The Journal releases a dedicated farm issue with twenty eight pages focused on farmer interests. It features a tabloid section and farm related material compiled from sources statewide. Advertisements invite randomly selected farmers to a theatre party with tickets valid for any admission between tomorrow and May 6 at State or Fox theatres.
Des Moines April 25 Clear weather aided corn plowing across western and southern Iowa while oats and barley seedings advanced in the same regions. The Federal Weather Bureau reported warm spring conditions with temperatures averaging 55.4 degrees, 5.4 above normal, and sunshine at 66 percent of possible. Showers were scattered and farm work moved quickly.
Peter Stuck, secretary of the Amana society, spoke to the Y's Men last evening outlining the community's origins in Europe from the 16th and 17th centuries and its 19th century move to Iowa near the Iowa River after 1841 crop failures. He noted the 1859 land acquisition of 26 000 acres and the community's later development under a communal system.
Leon Beatty American Legion post met in regular session last night in the Legion hall with about 25 or 30 members present. The next Washington county Legion meeting will be in Brighton on May 13 and the first district spring conference will be in Stanwood on May 19. Refreshments were served. Bernard Walker and Palmer Shilling led the committee.
A man was paroled on his sentence to the Anamosa Reformatory by Judge D V Jackson. The reform approval followed sentencing details in the prior proceedings.
In Des Moines on April 21 the Iowa house defeated a local option measure to ban beer in towns voting for it by 61 to 43. Rep Harry E. Morrow argued that local option would merely legalize bootlegging under the current system. The debate highlighted concerns about campus drinking at the State University of Iowa and Iowa State College and included staunch exchanges between Rep P C Rasmussen and Rep C E Lockingbill over alcohol distribution and enforcement.
The Daughters of American Revolution adopted a resolution condemning President Roosevelt's plan to reorganize the Supreme Court. The group warned the changes could threaten checks and balances among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, crucial to democracy.
