Balloon Breaks Away from Mooring Over New Mexico
A giant research balloon intended to lift two people for high altitude astronomy broke free from its mooring at Hellman Air Force Base in Alamogordo New Mexico. The gondola and crew were left behind as winds swept the balloon aloft, ending the second Operation Stargazer attempt. Capt Joseph Kittinger Jr. and astronomer William White planned a 24 hour sealed flight beneath the 80,000 foot balloon, but weather and wind prevented a successful lift off.
