Russell Gracie sneezed while driving in Enfield New Hampshire causing his auto to veer off a 20 foot embankment into a wreck. Police recovered the dentures from the wrecked vehicle and Gracie was uninjured.
In Des Moines the Iowa Legislature opened 1953 session work on appropriations and taxes. The Senate caucused on union taxes and a federal state pension plan for public employees while considering a 75 percent tax collection system and a $75 million pension bond. House clashes over school aid and a union shop bill dominated floor action with motions to move bills from committee to Senate or House for full debate and lobbyist restrictions on the House floor.
The 45000-ton U S battleship New Jersey shelled Wonsan harbor fortifications with 16 inch and 5 inch guns striking shore emplacements. The destroyer James Keyes suffered a large hole in its main deck with minor casualties and one seriously wounded. Ground fighting slowed at Panmunjom as prisoners of war exchanged. Unidentified planes attacked Allied positions in Chorwon Valley. Major Walton McMullen reported only 11 ground contacts from midnight to 6 p m.
Investigators of the Interstate Commerce Commission searched for the cause of a Burlington passenger train crash eight miles east of Osceola. Three people were killed Lloyd Fisher Ray Schultz and Mrs Elizabeth Schaetz and 19 injured. The four car diesel train ran off a curve through a deep cut and smashed into an embankment.

Dr You Chan Yang Korean ambassador to the United States will open the 1953 Veishen at Iowa State College on May 14 announced by the Veishen Committee. His home city is Pusan Korea he earned a medical degree from Boston University and practiced medicine in Hawaii.
A hotel fire in Sioux City damaged the West Hotel causing about 200000 dollars in losses. Two wings burned out completely and the third section suffered smoke and water damage. About 100 guests were registered. most escaped with belongings. Firefighter John Fountinelle was slightly injured. Seven fire companies fought the blaze for over four hours.
Sioux City police said thieves stole a safe containing about 1150 from the Eagles Lodge on Sunday night. Officers noted the burglars rifled a music box and a bowling game machine, and tracks indicated the safe was loaded into a truck outside the building.
A Sunday night fire at 9 15 destroyed a brooder house and 100 baby chicks at the King Johnson home in Brighton. No injuries reported. Fire officials investigated the cause.
The Chicago factory explosion and fire death toll rose to 34 as investigators probe the cause and possible arson. A man claiming to be in the explosion was held in Ann Arbor for questioning. Wyman high school seniors stage a three act comedy Good Gracious Grand ma Friday evening April 24 at 8 oclock. A short concert by the Wyman band precedes the play. The annual meeting of the Washington Softball association will be held Thursday at 7 30 PM in the VFW hall. All interested players managers and sponsors are urged to attend. Plans will be made for the league opening around June 1 and officers will be elected.

Officials began a giant task of rehousing more than 3 000 homeless families and clearing rubble after tornadoes claimed 11 lives across Arkansas Alabama and Georgia. Hospitals in the region remained crowded with hundreds injured as 100 mile per hour winds toppled homes and damaged the Red Cross counted 2 100 uninhabitable and 552 damaged. Soldiers from Ft Benning patrolled the devastated area with Lowell McCracken noting the scene resembles Korea.
