Twelve sailors of the 849 were hurt when the after battery of a New London submarine exploded at the base. Gas fumes and a tremor sent men against the chamber walls as carbon monoxide circulated. Rescuers with gas masks carried the injured to the base hospital. most suffered broken limbs and possible internal injuries as the vessel had just returned from Portsmouth.
