India offers to resume relations with Pakistan

New Delhi states India will normalize ties with Pakistan after Indira Gandhi sent a letter to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on April 11. The offer follows Bhutto’s willingness to withdraw a five year old ICAO complaint over Karachi Dacca overflights and includes talks on air links, overflights, and resuming rail and road communications.

GNP posts sharp rise in first quarter 1976

Washington reports the Commerce Department data showing the real GNP rising 7.5 percent annual rate in Q1 1976, led by inventory investment and the lowest inflation in years. The figure exceeds pre-recession levels and marks a strong economic recovery with an inflation rate of about 3.7 percent.

Ray awaits ruling on long truck suit in Iowa

Gov. Robert D. Ray said the fate of 65-foot double-bottom trucks in Iowa tests will decide a lawsuit by the Motor Club of Iowa seeking to halt the May 1 start. The lower court heard the case on its merits after denying a dismissal. Ray plans talks with DOT and DPS officials and expects no May 1 injunction. He will abide by the lower court decision and notes no current plan to seek a court injunction. The governor also said state staff study using the item veto on the three year property tax plan.

United Press report says Morris Udall failed to gain a May 4 Indiana primary ballot spot due to petition signature mixup. Supreme Court delay over his appeal likely comes too late. Carter leads Maryland poll as voters in Maryland weigh May 18 primary.

Iowa House approves hard drug minimum sentence amendment

The Iowa House adopted an 83 to 0 amendment allowing judges to set a minimum sentence for hard drug dealers up to half the maximum indeterminate term. Debate covered other drug penalties and a rejected crime victims' compensation proposal, as the House presses on with seven weeks of code revision debate and 64 amendments remaining.

Vandalism and theft hit Washington area churches and shops

Police report a spate of vandalism and theft over the weekend across churches and nearby businesses in Washington. The Prime Rib Steak building west of Pizza Hut on West Madison Avenue lost $4,000 in equipment including tables chairs and an electronic oven found later by deputies. Church offices at Living Word Prairie Flower Immanuel Lutheran First Assembly of God and First Baptist suffered break ins with cash and items missing and windows broken. In most cases damages exceeded the value of stolen goods.

Heavy Rains in Iowa Warn of Flooding Risk

Crests above flood stage on several Iowa rivers were expected today and later this week after heavy central rains. Iowa River forecast to crest four to five feet above flood stage near Marshalltown and two to three feet over in Marengo. Shell Rock near Marble Rock and Skunk River crests projected in Oskaloosa Sigourney and Brighton areas. Des Moines and Raccoon rivers to stay within banks. statewide warnings noted alongside other regional flooding and weather events.

Denounce Teng Hsiaoping in China drive gains pace

The New China News Agency reported a vigorous campaign of renunciation against Teng Hsiaoping, former vice chairman of the Communist Party, who also lost posts as vice premier and acting chief of the armed forces chief. Soldiers militiamen and millions of Chinese participate in the drive to advance criticism of Teng.

Three killed in Iowa weekend traffic crashes

Three persons died in Iowa traffic accidents over the weekend. Ottumwa man Tony Armstrong, 21, was killed in a one car crash west of Fairfield on US 34 when the car rolled seven times. His Ottumwa companion David Rae Bowen, 25, survived with minor injuries. Two Waterloo children also died after being struck by a car while wandering on a city street seeking night crawlers.

Trash pileups burden rural county collection sites

The Washington County Board of Supervisors appeals for help from rural residents to curb dumping at five trash collection sites. Large items such as furniture and livestock feeders are placed near the boxes, overwhelming two pickups and a third metal bin. Residents are urged to haul bulky waste to the SEMCO landfill near Richland, with gate charges covered by the county, to protect limited disposal funds and follow posted rules.
