Paul Revere program at library celebrates heritage week

The Washington Public Library hosts a Bicentennial and National Library Week event with Paul Revere look alike Pat Hotle delivering The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. Police raid on 614 West Monroe yields marijuana arrest

City police seized a small amount of marijuana and arrested two people after raiding a residence at 614 West Monroe Street. Adults Jim Cartwright and a 17 year old juvenile face charges. The Washington Municipal band rehearsal moves to the mobile room behind Lincoln Elementary School on Monday at 8 p.m. due to the athletic banquet at the Junior High.

Weather outlook shows cool, unsettled weekend

Three-in-one education funding bill moves forward

House Appropriations Chair Keith Dunton announced a bill to combine funding for the State Board of Regents, the Department of Public Instruction, and educational facilities into a single package. The measure aims at about 225 million dollars and seeks to clarify each area's standing to reduce floor debate. The legislature targets a 1.1 billion dollar spending level, about 3 million below Gov. Ray's proposal, while also pressing long truck legislation to ease interstate shipping and budgeting.

Iowa Daily Press Ass n reports a flurry of activity as House committees pushed toward Friday deadline. Numerous bills were approved including local option taxes, guest tax, altered court costs, workmen's compensation, and collective bargaining rules. Other measures cover municipal finance, eminent domain, wine sales by private distributors, twin trailers, county home rule, city code updates, housing authority, civil rights remedies, medical malpractice costs, and Sunday liquor sales extending serving hours.
