In Toledo Ohio a northbound train crew halted after sighting a southbound track approaching. The southbound train stopped to avert a head on crash with Marion T Watson age 59 who was later jailed on a drunk and disorderly charge.
President Eisenhower tells Speaker Rayburn that Congress controls most federal spending and that many House cuts are not real savings. He notes about 500 million could be trimmed from a 72 billion budget, with much remaining tied to mandatory and security spending.
The entry offers a five word slogan to promote Washington as a site for new industries in a Washington Industrial Corporation contest with a $50 prize.
The Park Board approved a 40 by 60 foot concrete slab in front of the band shell in Central Park, narrowed from 54 by 60 feet to avoid removing more than one tree. It will be financed by other sources and supervised by the park board, with bandstand use for civic events and worship services.
Friends of Robert Hanks, terminal manager at Ryan Transportation in Fort Madison, issued an appeal in Washington to find blood donors for his bone marrow disease. Hanks requires a pint of blood every other day and doctors say he must receive type A negative donations before Sunday evening. Contact 799-1 in Washington to donate.
Garnet R. Mason, 72, longtime resident of this community, died April 9 1957 at his Arlington California home. He was known as Hi Mason son of Arthur Mason who once ran an express and drug business here. An original member of the Washington UTD Band he left Washington in 1904 worked at Rock Island shops in Moline before moving to California. He married at Long Beach in 1927. Surviving wife a brother Harley and a sister Ethel of Radcliffe Iowa. Lloyd McCall a former Washington resident now at Santa Ana visited him in recent years.
Fred Cleveland Forinash 72 died at 4 45 p m Thursday April 18 1957 in his West Chester home after a three week illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Earl Erb. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born August 14 1884 in West Virginia and moved to Missouri at 21. He married Blanche Miller March 6 1909 and moved to West Chester in 1916. He retired and moved to West Chester 17 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias. He farmed many years. Survivors: wife Pauline Jolly of Des Moines daughter four grandchildren three great grandchildren one brother Ray of Charleston Ill one sister Mrs William Connolly Raymondsville Mo. Son Troy preceded him in death.
Washington Moose lodge members run their annual Easter car lift to ferry residents to worship services both tonight and Sunday morning. Volunteers will drive cars made available for worshippers as part of a community service project led by Verle Mitchell with committee members Robert Dunbar Hubert Wilson and Dale Sheetz.
United Press reports the British freighter West Breeze sailed through the Suez Canal as the first British ship since the October invasion. Egyptian press hailed it amid canal tolls paid in Swiss francs and Cairo’s push to insulate the canal from politics. King Hussein of Jordan seeks positive neutrality while Jordan borders tighten against some Soviet travelers amid regional tension.

A severe spring thunderstorm was moving toward Iowa with a potential for isolated tornadoes in the western half between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Forecasters warned of damaging winds up to 70 mph and hail up to one inch.
Iowa Republican chairman Robert Beck accused a bid rigging and bribery attempt to force a Democratic takeover of the Highway Commission. He named Roland Reko Des Moines and Virgil W. Smith Milan Ind as contact men, with Loveless promising an investigation. The bid split involved Gibbs-Cook and All-Wheel Drive for 60 tractor mowers.
Local art classes directed by Mr Bump completed a ceramics unit. Many students gained experience throwing on the potter's wheel.

Washington's youngest entrepreneurs Susie Duncan 9 Billy 12 and Larry 15 will open the Popcorn Shack this weekend. They will continue the late O E Schmitt's stand on the northeast corner of the square operating after school and later 1 to 9 30 p m in summer.
Severe weather swept the central states with tornadoes, hail, and heavy rain across South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and northern Oklahoma. Two tornadoes touched down near Pottsboro near the Oklahoma border, destroying chicken houses and a garage and damaging a home as 40 mph winds lashed the plains.
Washington County plans fifty miles of road improvements this summer including 26.08 miles of local roads with grading gravel surfacing and other work. The program totals 226 618 with 109 798 transferred from trunk road funds. Total county receipts available 448 095 include 231 145 carried over from last year.

Directed by Vernon White at Ainsworth Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with Mrs White on piano and Mrs Roberts on organ, Kathy Stephens on tympani. Free will offering.
A large crowd of worshippers is expected at the Washington YMCA on Sunday for the annual Easter Sunrise service sponsored by the Y s Men s Club. The service features a capella choir from the high school, organist John Yousling, and speaker Dean J J Early of Iowa Wesleyan College. The public is invited to attend at 7 a m.
Four men, Clemet Grassier and Orville Pixler of Nebraska, William Larsen Jr of Iowa, and Robert Grant of Chicago, were killed in a head on crash on U S 30 four miles east of Boone. Grassier drove the panel truck. Pixler rode with him. Larsen drove the car. Grant was a hitchhiker. Authorities said the truck and car collided on a curve after returning from Indiana work.
In a Loop department store raid, three burglars armed with acetylene torches and burglary tools were killed after a seven man detective detail hid in a dark office for seven hours. The slain included James Rentner 30 of Chicago, James L Wulf 28 of Glenview, and James Bartimio 30 of Melrose Park.
Weather outlook for Iowa calls for considerable cloudiness through Saturday with showers and thunderstorms continuing southeast. The northwest half faces a 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. chance of locally severe storms and isolated tornado risk. Temperatures will be near normal with highs 60 to 66 in the west and 66 to 75 in the southeast.
