A Sioux City column recalls wartime events as Sergeant L K Shadduck stops motorist A B Jones for a mid block U turn. Jones pleads guilty to reckless driving. Municipal Judge Berry J Sisk reduces the fine from 25 to 5 dollars citing little overhead in the case.
Des Moines reports 191 Burlington farm families displaced for the army shell loading plant have been resettled at least temporarily. Sociologist J Edwin Losey of Milwaukee spoke at the Midwest Sociological Society meeting in Des Moines before 250 sociologists. He said 46 of 98 landowners retired, 36 bought new farms, four rented land, while tenant farmers fared less well.
Six men who say they were at the Wilson and Co plant during a 24 day strike report being dragged from a car a mile from the plant, beaten by six unidentified assailants who broke the car window. No charges were filed as police guarded the plant while workers left amid boos and sporadic fist fights. The agreement ends the strike with the union waiving its closed shop demand and negotiations to resume on other issues.
J Edgar Hoover aide Lee Kennington of Washington addressed the Iowa Junior Chamber convention in Sioux City, praising the FBI chief and condemning last year's smear campaign while lauding federal civil liberties efforts. The speech highlighted the FBI's stance on civil rights and government integrity.
J. W. Chandler county agent announces two contour farming demonstrations in the county next Wednesday April 23 with H. Van Vinck from Iowa State College assisting. First at 9:99 a.m. at the Richard Scott farm near Kalona, second at 1:30 p.m. at the Ray Sojka farm near Fairview. Demonstrations explain contour farming, contour lines, base lines, and benefits in moisture conservation and reduced erosion with less fuel use. Farmers may attend.
Des Moines reports predict freezing conditions tonight across western Iowa with possible snow. The weather bureau warns of much colder weather statewide, with minimums of 28 to 40 degrees by region. Fresh northerly winds may bring snow to the west portion as rainfall totals show variable amounts.
Spring retreats as a mass of cold air moves in from the northwest. Rain turns to snow across Nebraska and South Dakota with thunderstorms and showers in the Mississippi valley, lake states, and Ohio valley. Subzero readings persist in the northern Rocky Mountain states, western Nebraska and the Dakotas with thermometers at 16 and 17 degrees in western Montana.
Government efforts to end the 19 day old walkout in the nation’s soft coal fields face fresh trouble. Northern coal operators ready to sign a new CIO contract protest President Roosevelt’s move to cut freight rate differentials benefiting the south. Southern operators refuse to sign a contract eliminating a 40 cent differential favoring the south. Labor Secretary Frances Perkins urged northern mines to resume operations next Tuesday and called for renewed negotiations with southern operators and the UMW.
Pennington stated that the FBI does not deny compiling information on individuals and groups involved in subversive activity while the phrase Gestapo and OGPU was hurled at the agency. The remark underscores tensions over counterintelligence methods.
Washington plans a county wide Citizenship Recognition Day on Friday May 16 to honor new voters aged 21. About 400 residents in Washington county are expected to become citizens in 1941. Supt Jordon Larson of Dubuque will speak, promoting Americanism work. The event will be at Washington high school with the band performing and invitations sent to new voters. Ten local groups sponsor the observance led by the American Legion and educational forces.
Ten applicants who underwent the weekly driving tests by a State highway patrol member received licenses to operate cars. Names include Maynard W. Bowers Gerald W. Wells Lewis J. Boyd Merle L. Dawson Lowdrell E. Lake Garland D. Marion Edward C. Miller Paul J. Troyer Clifton P. Stumpf Merna Coakley and others. One failed the tests two received instruction permits and four chauffeurs licenses were issued to George L Atkins Charles B Owens Arthur W. Ross and James O. Criswell.
George K. E. Hopping 76 died at his Brighton home after months of ill health. Born Feb 6 1865 south of Washington he moved to Brighton five years ago with wife Trissie Beenblossom whom he wed in 1888. Survived by wife three Washington daughters a brother and a sister eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral Monday at L. A. Jones Washington burial at Shrock cemetery. Brighton man Bryan Barnett suffers stroke from cerebral hemorrhage hospital in Fairfield. remains unconscious.
About 30 German prisoners tunneled out of a camp in northern Ontario near Lake Superior. Authorities labeled it the greatest mass escape since the war, triggering a large manhunt with police, guards, railroad workers, and volunteers scouring the wild woods along the CP line.
Dr Leonard V Koos professor of secondary education at the University of Chicago will visit Washington junior college on Tuesday April 22. Koos, a leader in the junior college movement, has conducted extensive research on administration methods and will visit only a few colleges this year in his junior college study.
The Washington board of education announced that many teachers expressed willingness to continue in the public school system next year. Contracts are not yet ready but will be signed soon. Three current staff are not on the list, and supervisor Harry Rowles is leaving for Lancaster Missouri to become superintendent there.
Military authorities rushed soldiers to the 70 square mile area surrounding the camp at Anglis Ontario to block all lanes and railroad lines. Scouting airplanes and bloodhounds were ordered to the scene.
Berlin claims advance to the Larisa rail junction after pushing past Mt Olympus, while Athens reports a solid Allied line holding against German assaults. British and Greek forces retreat to a third defense line amid heavy fighting along the front.
Berlin April 19. Adolph Hitler on the eve of his 52nd birthday addressed supporters from headquarters in a message sent to peoples in southeastern Europe. He warned of a hard battle ahead and urged both home front and four front-line men to be prepared for sacrifices while appealing for tributes to the German Cross.
London officials disclosed that bombs hit the houses of parliament in a raid on Wednesday night with the commons suffering the most damage. St Andrew's Holborn, a major Wren church, was destroyed in the same raid, marking heavy losses and heightened concern in London.
Public program at Washington High School honors 52 county youths who completed an eight week motor mechanics and general metal work course funded by the federal government and supported by the Washington School System and local advisory council.
