A compromise Mississippi flood relief plan was drafted at a conference of Republican House leaders and southern Mississippi valley congressmen. The group aims to avert a presidential veto and present the agreement to the president soon.
Preparatory services will be held this Friday at 7 30 pm and Saturday at 2 30 pm in the United Presbyterian church. The Rev John T Aikin of Columbus City will preach at both services. All are welcome.
Mrs Clarence Thorley formerly Miss Lela Anthony of Grandview was found dead at her Davenport home with gas turned on. Despondent over ill health the 40 year old woman is survived by her husband step mother and multiple sisters. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 30 at Greenwood chapel Davenport.
The American Legion auxiliary sets May 26 as Poppy Day with poppy sales run by Mrs. Oscar Lane, Mrs. Leslie Dunlap, Mrs. Tom Downing, Mrs. Ed Grayson and Mrs. Ola Mayer. A poster contest for eighth grade or younger students reopens, offering prizes of 2.90, 1.00 and a candy box. Posters must not exceed 15 by 18 inches and reflect the poppy’s meaning. entries close May 25.
Jacob Franks seventy one year old millionaire father of Bobby Franks died in his Chicago hotel apartment from heart disease. The death followed his earlier decline after his son’s murder by Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb.
Davenport bootleggers, now over 25 inmates in Scott County Jail, face sentences set by Federal Judge Char les A Dewey after pleading guilty to liquor violations. Dewey warned that future offenses will bring prison terms up to a year, stressing the community's enforcement stance and the risks of violence tied to bootlegging.
Fraulein Herta Junkers says she may not join the perilous winter journey from Belle Isle to Greenland and will stay at Murray Bay to handle matters. Major James Fitzmaurice hopes to fly the Bremen back to Greenly Island by Friday with repairs and then proceed toward New York by Sunday.

Washington April 19 A push to discuss the D A R blacklist and Wilbur navy program failed on the congress floor. President general Mrs Alfred J Brousseau refused recognition to Eleanor Roy who sought to present resolutions. The resolutions committee later offered a hearing tomorrow morning.
Des Moines reports show Iowa’s oats crop suffers another blow as below freezing temperatures sweep the state. A fourth snowstorm hits northern counties with 20 degree above zero highs in many areas and winds near gale strength. Temperatures will dip below freezing tonight while the northwest sees the coldest 30s. Rain and snow fell in the north and northeast yesterday and last night with several inches in some spots.
Sheriff Detains Frank Halpin a seventeen year old suspect in a burglary at the city warehouse old water works building. He faces a preliminary hearing before Justice J W Patton. Copper wire and a flashlight were stolen after breaking a door lock. Halpin allegedly sold some wire in Muscatine before being arrested in Ottumwa and held for Washington sheriff. He says he escaped from a Massachusetts reform school.
E B Sterling is in Washington this week completing the publication of a Farm Account Book through the local Farm Bureau. He visits the city annually, this being his seventh trip, and the book circulates among local farmers as a popular record system with ads from local businesses on the cover. The Journal prints the edition each year. He is a fine gentleman.
Reports from Belgrade Sofia Bucharest and Athens say a strong earthquake centered near Philippopolis Bulgaria touched Yugoslavia Romania and Macedonia. Bulgaria already struck by a Saturday quake with fifty dead and three thousand homes destroyed bears the worst damage.
Reports from Sofia indicate an earthquake in southern Bulgaria has killed several people. No further details were provided.
The Klein Klothing Company of Washington takes possession of the M H Cuddy clothing store in Fairfield to close out stock for about a month. Joe Falk will manage the store locally, moving from Washington in about two months. The Cuddy store, an established Fairfield business, will reopen with similar merchandise and layout after remodeling.
Irvin Hochstetler and Lee Slabaugh of Kalona were bound over to the grand jury on a charge of stealing from HE. D. Duwa. Authorities say 25 bushels of shelled corn 1 bushel of clover seed and about 106 pounds of tankage were taken from the Duwa farm on March 30. A tire tread clue aided the case. deputies arrested the men with search warrants. Pete Wenger and wife were in town yesterday.
Charles Birger, Southern Illinois gangster, was executed at 9:51 a.m. in Franklin County jail for conspiring to murder Mayor Joe Adams of West City. The last Illinois gallows killing before the switch to electric chair, Birger faced reporters and a crowd of about 500 as Rabbi J. W. Mazur offered spiritual counsel.
Two high school youths sparked an investigation after taking a car parked near the school. Keith Wells of West town identified as the driver. the car was returned later with a damaged tire. Sheriff Denison warns such acts resemble theft and urge lessons beyond school, noting penalties for unauthorized car use.
The House Rules Committee prepared a path for the Haugen farm relief bill to be considered next week after the Mississippi flood control bill. Twelve hours of general debate were allotted with a possible night session, likely Tuesday action, and an amendment path for the debenture plan. Four hours of general debate were authorized for the merchant marine bill to follow farm legislation.
