Fort Madison man charged with Oasis Supper Club arson
Merlin Lynn Russell, 24, was charged with arson in connection with the April 8 fire that destroyed the Oasis Supper Club five miles south of Burlington. He was to be arraigned and held in Des Moines County Jail on a $5,000 bond. The blaze caused about 300000 dollars in damages.

Washington district approves pay raises for non teaching staff
The Washington Community School District Board boosted administrator and non teaching staff pay by about 9.43 to 10 percent with a 10 percent average rise for maintenance and transportation workers. Bus drivers gains ranged up to 11.90 a day with two year step increases. Teachers ratified a $7,600 base plus health benefits, while administrators receive new contracts and title changes including director of curriculum and purchasing.

Ammonia Truck Overturns On Iowa 78 Injuring Driver
A truck carrying anhydrous ammonia overturned three miles east of Winfield Iowa on Iowa 78. Driver Arthur Herman Barnes 54 Coralville sustained minor injuries after swerving to avoid a hog. No ammonia leakage occurred and the tractor portion was demolished. No charges were filed.

Washington Public Library to close for remodeling week
The Washington Public Library will close next week for remodeling including carpeted main floor and new drapes. The $8 900 contract was awarded to Golden Touch Decorators funded partly by federal revenue sharing money. Washington High Choir Prepares St Louis Tour and Festival
Sixty six vocal students and seven chaperones from Washington High School depart April 25 for a St Louis tour. They will perform at St. Louis Cathedral and compete in the Six Flags Over Mid-America Choral Festival. The itinerary includes Keokuk, Hannibal, Powell Hall, the St Louis Cathedral, the St Louis Zoo, Six Flags, and Grant’s Farm with rehearsals by the St Louis Symphony.
