Ruth Hammes, 41, died in Keokuk County Hospital while laboring to deliver her 10th child. Her death follows the 1956 car train crash that killed eight of her children and the birth of a son Myron in 1958. Her heart strain due to a weak uterus was given as the cause.
Lewis Waldschmidt 75 died suddenly of a heart attack at his Riverside home April 18 1960. Funeral 10 a.m. Wednesday at St Marys Church Riverside with burial in Mt Olivet Cemetery. He was born near Riverside March 12 1885 and survived by his wife three sons two daughters and several grandchildren.
News arrives of the death of Mrs. Frank B. Carter in Livermore California on April 11. She was buried at Anitala. Formerly a Washington resident, Mr Carter was a local clothier. A daughter Dixie now Mrs Roy Newberg of Livermore survives.
Scout Troop 237 of the Methodist Church held an outdoor breakfast for fathers early Saturday morning about two miles south of Washington. Leaders Charles Lawson Milo Steele Jr Wilson Putnam and Dave Horsey assisted the youths in cooking and preparing the meal.
A near capacity crowd of about 400 attended the Sunrise Service at the YMCA gym sponsored by the Y’s Men’s club. The event featured lilies, crosses, a gold heart, choirs, instrumental groups, and an Easter message stressing unity under Christ. Rev. Jay Curry gave the benediction as YMCA and Hi Y members assisted.
Dan Peters an 18 year old employee of Weber and Huston Grain and Coal yard in Columbus Junction was seriously injured Saturday when a tractor overturned and pinned him. He was driving the machine to park it when it toppled, and he was transported to University Hospital in Iowa City.
Police in Johannesburg arrested at least 40 people in a Easter Monday crackdown to avert a week long stay at home strike called by the outlawed African National Congress. Bootleggers and intimidators were rounded up as Verwoerd recovers in hospital after an assassination attempt.
Washington Community School District nears one year since reorganization. Eleven hundred sixty one pupils attend five schools with 80 staff and a 22 to 1 pupil teacher ratio. District assessed value is 15 million plus credits totaling 19 million for a 32 697 school tax levy this year.
In London a massive Easter weekend rally draws an estimated 40 000 protesters along a seven mile march to Trafalgar Square. The event, organized by the Committee for Nuclear Disarmament, draws students, professionals and Americans, with thousands lining streets to watch and cheer.
Washington High School sends Tom Young Ron Robertson and Nellie Lindsey to the 14th annual National Leadership Conference of DECA in Kansas City Missouri from Wednesday to Saturday with George Chambers as state sponsor. Tom Young Iowa DECA president chairs a national nominating committee and Nellie Lindsey competes in a national public speaking event while Ron Robertson joins the national membership committee and PR workshop. A Sears Roebuck Foundation grant of 1000 supports thirty Iowa delegates. forty states expected represented.
In Sydney Mines Nova Scotia a 14 month old boy Russell MacKenzie was taken from his crib by a tall stranger wearing a tweed jacket. He was found seven hours later unharmed beside a fence near his home by store clerk Jean McPhee.
Tom Robb Washington County Extension Director authored a March issue piece in the Extension Service Review. The magazine, printed in Washington DC and distributed to Extension workers nationwide, discusses professional training for farm and home development work.

Eight die in Easter weekend crashes across Iowa and surrounding areas. A LeMars couple, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jakso, and Donald Binder die from a three car crash near Marcus in Cherokee County Sunday night. Six young passengers in the third car escape injury. Other fatalities include Mrs. Daisy Coppersmith of What Cheer and infant Scott Reinertson near Decorah. Town toll stands at 128 deaths by Sunday midnight.
Washington auto dealers observe National New Car Dealer Week April 18 to 30 and sponsor a prize of a seven day vacation for two at the Oaks Hotel in Excelsior Springs Missouri. The $100 value prize will go to a Washington resident who registers during the two week period and may be taken before October 1. Charles Eugene Reeves 28 Lib ertyville Iowa was captured after a mile long chase by Patrolman B D Hall using a flying tackle. Reeves fled from a stolen car and resisted commands as shots were fired. The vehicle had been stolen from Eli Shada Anamosa and Reeves had recent prison release for burglary.
Partly cloudy and warmer conditions continue through Tuesday with a slight temperature change in the northwest. Lows range 38 to 45 and highs on Tuesday from 62 to 72 depending on region. Wednesday remains partly cloudy and mild with a chance of rain at night. Temperatures through Saturday stay above normal with upper 60s to lower 70s highs and mid to upper 40s lows. A warming trend starts early in the period, cooler Thursday, then another warm-up later. Precipitation averages 2 to 1 inches, mainly as showers later in the period.
