London April 18 General Maurice declares the British army has endured severe strain while fighting a Waterloo in Flanders. He notes German entropy in divisions and British gains at Wytschaete, and explains Ypres withdrawal was planned to shorten the line, not forced by Bailleul events.
Survivors recount a night run for life after a collision between the American steamship O B Jennings and the British War Knight loaded with naphtha. Destroyers plowed through blazing fuel to pull crews aboard as War Knight struck a mine and blew up. One Jennings seaman died. several Americans were badly burned. The two vessels were later towed and sunk or beached.

London reports the admiralty tally for the past week shows 16 British ships sunk by mines or submarines. Eleven of the sunk merchantmen were 1,600 tons or more and four were smaller. one fishing vessel also perished.
Tiéuston April 18 Civilian instructor Farl R. Southsee of Binghamton New York and a cabin boy were injured when their airplane fell about 100 feet in two spins at Sington field. Southsee suffered serious injuries while the other occupant escaped with minor hurt.
Paris reports Paul Bolo Pasha condemned as a traitor was executed by firing squad in the Vincennes forest. He left Sante prison 45 minutes earlier, wore a new suit, and gave two silk handkerchiefs to his brother and widow. He refused to sign the release at the guard office and requested commotion before departure. The burial followed at Vincennes with the body turned over to his family.
Representative William Atkinson Jones of Virginia died at George Washington Hospital after a lengthy illness. He served in Congress and was a prominent figure in Virginia politics. His death leaves a vacancy in the Virginia delegation and prompts ceremonial notices from colleagues.
London April 18 nationalist Ireland plans resistance to conscription while the UK focuses on a home rule bill. A drafting committee led by Walter Hume Long J Austen Chamberlain and A W Samuels plus George Nicoll Barnes reports rapid progress toward a federal measure applicable to Ireland Scotland Wales and England.

Rome April 18 H P Davison chairman of the American Red Cross war council leads a Red Cross party visiting Italian cities. Ambassador Page and Somagda president of the Red Cross bid them farewell at the railroad station before departure for Florence.
