Washington County cleanup nets over $200 for CAP youths

About 50 volunteers cleared 20 miles of county roads raising more than $200 at $10 per mile for the Community Action Program Youth Employment Service. The effort included seven trucks, a wiener roast at noon, and finds from trash pickups such as two dollars and even a car hood.

Washington High Band Taped for WMT Eye on Iowa

Washington High School jazz band traveled to Cedar Rapids to tape a TV program for WMT's Eye on Iowa. The session ran from noon to after nine with lights cameras and microphones adjusted for multiple takes while soloists were filmed. A half hour show airs 10 30 p m Sunday April 23 featuring the band which has earned invitation to the Montreux Switzerland International Jazz Festival this summer. Downbeat notes the Iowa group as the sole high school invited this year among hundreds considered with twelve chosen. The festival stage will include college bands and top U S and European artists.

Stormy Saturday Hits Muscatine Power and Mudslide

Officials report high winds up to 530 miles per hour causing multiple power outages lasting about two hours in Muscatine. Heavy rains triggered a mudslide on Mississippi Drive, blocking one lane of traffic and keeping four lanes partially closed as crews spent Sunday clearing debris.

Washington Junior High students excel at state music contest

Five students from Washington Junior High competed in Ottumwa at the State Music Contest sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association. Sherry Eash Cheri Wheeler and others earned excellent Division II ratings in flute solos duets and clarinet trio.

A shredded paint like coating on the lander’s aluminum panel prompts engineers to run tests while mission control pursues reassurance and a possible delay. Rogers vows continued support for South Vietnam war effort

Secretary of State William P. Rogers says U S bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong shows resolve to act to stop a Communist takeover in the south while denying new ground troops. Nixon would use air and naval power to support South Vietnamese forces. In Paris, Hanoi offers new secret peace talks if bombing ends and air raids stop.

Washington High School FBLA claims the Lloyd V Douglas plaque for the fourth straight year at the 26th state convention in Cedar Falls with over 700 attendees. County Clerk Office Continues Passport Issuance

Bob Riley district court clerk in Washington County confirms his office remains authorized to issue passports after checking with the Chicago Passport Agency. He notes a Friday report that starting today passports will be issued in 12 Iowa post offices as well as federal and county courthouses.

Miller urges Republicans to woo young voters at rally

U S Sen Jack Miller told about 300 county Republicans at a Knights of Columbus dinner that polls show 25 percent of young voters favor Democrats, 15 percent Republicans, and 60 percent are uncommitted. He argued Republicans must better communicate their record on ecology drugs Vietnam and military spending while noting agricultural committee ties to southern crops and criticizing press coverage of Nixon. Several state officials attended or sent messages, with county candidates listed as contesting various offices.
